I'm having some trouble with my little netbook. It's always slow (but it was cheap and it travels easily.)

I can't launch Internet explorer at all. I uninstalled it and re-installed it, and it worked once, but after that , it shuts down as soon as it is launched. I usually use firefox, but I've been having trouble downloading items, like clipart and templates from microsoft.com. I am suspecting an infection of some kind.

Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
As I'm still in training at What The Tech, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

And it all seems to have fitin this one reply.

I tried to launch MS Explorer and it still would not launch - maybe it needs to be uninstalled also?

thanks again - let me know what I need to do next.

Sara
Hi Patrick's Mom,

No problem

It looks like the Internet Explorer issue is being caused by the Free Radio TV Toolbar that is installed on your computer, so we will try to uninstall it and see if that fixes the problem.

To remove a program that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In the Currently installed programs box, click Free Radio TV Toolbar, and then click Remove.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
Let me know if Internet Explorer works after that.
Thanks Noodle tech, It's been an interesting morning. I couldn't boot up this PC because Zinio was in some kind of a loop and kept on loading and reloading. I wasn't that wild about reading magazines on-line anyway, so I used uninstaller to remove it. Then per you instructions I removed the radio free tool bar. I don;t know where that came from anyway. While I was at it, I removed someother toolbars that I don;t use. When that was done, I was able to open Explorer, and from Explorer I could download and open a file from yahoogroups. (I belong to some knitting groups and that is where we post and share knitting patterns. I use it often.) I still cannot open files from my yahoogroups, through Firefox. Used to be that firefox was safer than Explorer. The PC is booting up much faster and running faster, but there is also a Zinio user agreement that pops up every time I boot up. evidently it was left over when I uninstalled it. Is there anything else I can do to get firefox to work properly? Sara
Hi Patrick's Mom,

I'm glad that fixed your Internet Explorer issue.

As for Firefox, I'm not sure what might be causing the problem. Can you try to uninstall and reinstall the latest version of Firefox? You can download the latest version here.

Also, can you run another OTL scan and post the log? I'll try to fix the Zinio user agreement issue with OTL.
Hello again! I did reload firefox, and I still cannot download Word documents, or really any microsoft app documents. I CAN download jpg's and pdf's. So I am doing some firefox help research. Maybe it's a setting that is set wrong or something.

Here is another OTL log:

Thanks!
Hi Patrick's Mom,

I have no idea why you are having this problem. I suggest you start a new thread in the Browsers, Internet, and Email forum and include a reference to this thread. They are better suited to deal with these kinds of problems.

Now let's take care of the Zinio popup.

Run OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :OTL
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [Zinio DLM] C:\Program Files\Zinio\ZinioReader.exe (Zinio, LLC)

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log ( don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time )
Let me know if this fixes the Zinio popup.
Yes. Thank you. That got rid of the zinio thing. I will try the other forum for the firefox issue. Thank you much. I think we are done here. Send me the donation thingy! And have a Merry "whatever you might celebrate!" Sara
Hi Patrick's Mom,

I'm glad that took care of it. Good luck fixing the Firefox issue.

You can donate to the WhatTheTech site by clicking here.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!
