I was here last year & I was able to set up ad hoc network. It worked for maybe 2 weeks & then stopped -no connection. I tried to re do everything, deleted everything and started over, but still doesn't work. I gave up. Wasn't going to come back and bother you guys. BUT NOW I got an early xmas present, an ereader -a WiFi Novel. It won't connect either.
My network & sharing center says 'waiting for users to connect'
My ereader says 'not in range'
any help would be appreciated.
anybody? please help
What is the reason behind the ad-hoc network? What are you trying to accomplish. We need some more details.
With the abundance of wireless routers, there is hardly any application where an ad-hoc network should be used.
Because you told me to.
Nov 15 2009 you said
"I understand. I just wanted to clarify that you are using a cellular USB adapter that is completely different than a standard high speed internet connection and that the suggestion to use a router isn't going to solve your problem in this particular case. The reason being that you can't plug the cellular USB adapter into the router like you can other high speed connections. It has to be shared out from the computer it is plugged in to which makes a real pain of things."
If you read the entire post you will see that I tether my cell phone to my PC via USB for my internet connection. I use the ad hoc connection for my wifi laptop.
This connection worked fine for about 2 weeks and then it would not connect. Actually it says the laptop is 'connected -signal strength excellent' but my browsers
-firefox or IE - can't find it.
Tried to 'repair' but it said that it couldn't.
I wanted to hack my new novel before the holidays, but wanted to get the wifi working first.
I too live out in the sticks. I used to use a Cellular card for internet access until access through a radio antenna became available in my area. I set up a couple networks using the cards… buts it has been a few years and I can't remember what I did. I'm not sure I used an ad-hoc network. I think I used a gateway.
Anyway… if you could let us know, in as much detail as possible, exactly how you have your system set up… maybe we can help you find a solution.
What would be really helpful is if you would go to network connections in your control panel and let us know what all is listed. Then right click on each connection and select properties. Then select internet protocol and click on properties. Record for us all of the settings found there. Please do this for both computers.
Cell phone tethered via USB to vista PC. With Broadcom 802.11g network adapter
Laptop is XP with Broadcom 802.11b/g wlan
Ztruker gave me a link last year that was easy to follow and worked like a charm.
2 weeks later, the browser in my laptop will not recognize the connection.
It wants to dial my cellphone instead. (I tether to it also, on occasion)
My laptop says it is connected. When I 'repair' the connection, it says
could not finish because it couldn't clear the ARP cache.
I have deleted all the connections on both computers and followed the instructions to set up a new one,
but it still won't work.
Please let me know what other info you need.
