Just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 530 to Windows 7 from XP. Had no problems with install transfered my files over and reinstalled all my programs. Have searched and updated all drivers. I now have a repeating tone sound coming from my speakers. 2 seperate tones repeating over and over again. Again I have updated drivers, when I go into Device manager and have Windows search for updated driver, it replies that I have the best driver. I have tried another set of speakers, still the sounds.I have downloaded drivers from Dell site and Realtek site with no change. Went into device manager disabled the on board sound and installed a PCI sound card still have the tones. Antivirus and antimalware are up to date not showing any infections. Have the latest BIOS from Dell. I have no other issues other than the tones coming out of my speakers. I keep the system sounds muted as not to hear them, music movies etc sound fine no issues. The tones start as soon as the computer is booted up and never change. Any help would be appreciated
Hello Ray J, Welcome to the WTT forums! ^_^ Have you had any unexpected shut downs? When you say the tones start as soon as the computer boots, do they happen even if you enter the BIOS? Cheers, Nahumi
Thanks for the quick reply I have had no unexpected shut downs. Have had no other issues with my computer other than these tones. Just booted and enter BIOS no tones
Okay, what I'm going to get you to do is run an online tool called PCPitstop. It will do a whole array of scans and tests, including driver tests, which will let me see the general health of your system. Just follow the instructions below :

Please use IE for the next steps. Chrome or Firefox aren't supported unfortunately.

Head over to http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/

At the top left of the page it should say "Sign up FREE". Click the button and create an account. Don't worry, it really is free.

Use a valid e-mail address and create a new password to login.

Go back to http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit and click the green button that says "Scan this system Now!". You will be asked to download and install an Active-X Control. This is a normal part of the proccess, so it's safe to install.

The tests will take a few minutes and you will see some flashing shapes on your screen. If you suffer from epilepsy or are susceptible to nausea or motion sickness, try not to look at the screen whilst it does these graphical tests.

Once the test is done, please copy and paste the URL of the summary page in your next post.

Cheers,
Okay, drivers look fine, but I have a feeling that you might have some Malware. For a new installation of Windows you have an extremely large ammount of tracking cookies. In addition to this, your browser is not protecting you from any malicious code.

Let's deal with the browser security first. PC Pitstop has a fairly good tutorial on fixing your security problem :

In addition to this, I want you to run all Microsoft Updates. Go to your Start Menu, All Programs and then Windows Update. Let it download and install all updates. You'll have to restart your computer a few times until it's completely up to date.

Deleting the tracking cookies is fairly easy. Open up IE8, go to Tools and then Internet Options. Under Browsing History click "Delete. . .". Make sure you only tick the following boxes : Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History. Make sure the option at the very top called "Preserver Favorites website data" is unticked. Then just click "Delete" at the bottom.

After you're all done with that, I suggest you head over to the Malware forum to make sure that you don't have any lingering Malware.

Once you're given the all clear, head back to this topic and we'll have a closer look.

Nahumi
How does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem.

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem.

These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP or Vista:
How to use msconfig in Windows XP
How to use msconfig in Windows Vista

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, boot to Safe Mode again, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system.
Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.
