I'm working with a tech in the malware section of these forums. The problem is something is making my sound wow or scratch. It seems as if the hard drive is accessing more too. Dell Inspiron E1405 WinXPSP3 Do you have a non-destructive HD/HD controller test? Leslie
if you go to the makers site of your drive you'll usually find some software apps you can run to get a complete test of your drive.

here's a link to wd(western digital) download test for windows :- http://support.wdc.com/product/download.as…d=3&lang=en

seagate drives :- http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca…0001a48090aRCRD

hope that helps you.

edit:- if you use seatools it says it, test's any brand of drive, here:- http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca…000dd04090aRCRD
If you know the brand of Hard Drive you have installed in that Dell, go to the product manufacturer site (Seagate, WD, Toshiba, etc) to download their own HD Health or Diagnostic utility.

Otherwise, here is a good free general HD Diagnostic: http://www.hdtune.com/download.html

Many things can cause excessive HD read/write accessing, including having a nearly full HD and malware infection.

As far as associating your sound distortion with the frequent activity of your HD, that may or may not be coincidental.

Check in Device Manager for Sound/Media/gaming related Drivers.
If there are warnings, consider uninstall and reinstall of the Driver.
Hey banth,

While a HD Test is unlikely to interfere with Malware Removal Work in progress, it is never wise to make other changes nor run extra scans without the knowledge and instruction of your Malware Removal specialist.

In this case, please complete the work you have in progress with LDTate http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?sh…15526&st=15 before moving on to run scans or do any other additional work here in Hardware.

Best Regards
He gave me the all-clear. For some reason this laptop is using the u$ default drivers. I believe I have a Seagate, so I will ask Dell to point me to the right one. Also there was a problem with the bluetooth drivers so I reinstalled them.
Run the free Belarc PC Audit. It will give you a listing of all your hardware, plus your software, and licenses for various software. Very handy to have a printed copy for each computer you own. Best Regards
