Hi Ange8889 and welcome to WTT

You have a choked down and bloated C: drive and need to create some space on that drive.
You also need to free up some ram usage and CPU resources which is creating a very sluggish PC.

Run 'Disk Cleanup' which can me found in the start menu under Programs / Accessories / tools or just type in Disk Cleanup in the Start Menu search box. Run this program regularly as it's a good housekeeper.

Clear Internet Cache permanently:
Open IE8 and if there is no Menu Bar showing, press Alt keyboard button.
Go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced tab / tick 'Empty internet files when browser is closed'

Unfortunately nowadays, new PC's come bloated with Software and then sometimes a few undesirable programs are added by the owner

Unnecessary software programs (bloatware) that could be uninstalled and were probably pre-loaded on your PC when purchased (most of them):

HPTCSSetup
HP Quick Launch Buttons 6.40 H2
HP Customer Experience Enhancements
HP User Guides 0128 (1.00.0000)
HP Total Care Advisor (2.4.4941.2798)
HP Doc Viewer (1.03.0001)
My HP Games ([removed])
Microsoft Live Search Toolbar (3.0.541.0)
(HP) ESU for Microsoft Vista (1.0.0)
ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection ([removed])
HP Active Support Library ([removed])
HP Total Care Advisor (2.4.6651.2902)
HP Update (5.002.005.003)
HP Help and Support
([removed])
Sweepi 5.4.00 (a performance enhancer)
Free Window Registry Repair (registry cleaner)
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (6.6.1015.36)
Adobe Community Help (3.0.0.400)
Adobe AIR (1.5.3.9120)
Acrobat.com (1.1.377)
Adobe Media Player (1.8)

Abode Reader could also be uninstalled and replaced with 'Foxit' which would free up some more space:
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/addons.php
When installing, untick all the extra add-ons offered, regardless if it says they are part of the free agreement. It will still install.

Don't forget to defrag. your PC when finished with all of the above and then re-run Overdrive and post the URL with your next post thanks.

A Tech. here will then probably get you to run a small program to check out your start-up Menu and see what software does not need to start at boot-up.

Cheers,
Lee
Morning Lee, Thanks for the info. Back when the lap top started to give me grief, I tried all the usual things, clean up and defrag. When I tried to delete files or run a defrag, the items 'hang' and I have to go to task manager to stop the process. Ergo my concern that something is corrupt. I was able to uninstall some of the items listed, but no success with the others. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ange
Your System is 'hanging' most probably because:

You have a choked down and bloated C: drive and need to create some space on that drive.
You also need to free up some ram usage and CPU resources which is creating a very sluggish PC.

What couldn't you uninstall?

Cheers,
Lee

PS edit:
I notice that you have several Intel drivers that need updating. Please use the utility at this site:
Intel driver auto-update utility:
http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm
Hi Lee, I was having trouble uninstalling Adobe. When I cancelled it, I kept getting a message that there is uninstall still in progress. I had to restart the computer and it was gone(?). Thanks for the link on the drivers. I'm about to install. I'll restart and try to clean up the C drive. Thanks, Ange
Good to see the Intel drivers have been updated. However, The IE8 Cache has not been cleared (736MB) Temp. files have not been cleared (209MB) Together, that's almost 1GB of wasted drive space. Your C: drive is still badly fragmented. These completely unnecessary programs are still on your system (and probably your Start-up menu too) and none of them are difficult to remove: Adobe Media Player Acrobat.com Adobe Community Help HP Help and Support (obviously not earning it's keep) Adobe Reader (A 'bloated' program and I suggest replacing with 'Foxit' as previously mentioned). HP Active Support Library (obviously not earning it's keep either) My HP Games (if your really into these games, keep them). HP Quick Launch Buttons HPTCSSetup Please try to fix all of the above and don't forget to Defrag. afterwards. Your dual core CPU which should be singing along, is still suffering resource overload. Cheers, Lee
Hi Lee, This is where I have the problem. For instance, I tried to uninstall the HP Games. Everything appeared to be moving along and then it freezes, saying the program is not responding. I have to cancel and because it just hangs I then have to use task manager to end the task. If I could get past this point, there is a lot of files and programs I would like to remove. As for temp files when using the internet,I have it checked off that the history is cleared when I close the program. I tried to manually delete everything and it shows there is nothing there (?). Ange

Yes, I'm sure your History files are now gone, but I wasn't giving you instructions on how to delete IE8 History. The instructions were to delete Internet Cache :)

Clear Internet Cache permanently:
Open IE8 and if there is no Menu Bar showing, press Alt keyboard button.
Go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced tab / tick 'Empty internet files when browser is closed'

Under the 'Security' section (scroll down to it) in the Advanced TAB.
Not::
Tools / General TAB / 'Delete Browsing history on exit'.

Also:

Run 'Disk Cleanup' which can me found in the start menu under Programs / Accessories / tools or just type in Disk Cleanup in the Start Menu search box. Run this program regularly as it's a good housekeeper.

It should already be ticked, but just make sure Temp. files are ticked in the removal options.

To remove Adobe Acrobat reader, Please try this:

Click on "user accounts" in the Control Panel. Turn off the account controls (turn back on later).

Download Microsoft Clean Up Utility to your Desktop from: http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_Cl…lity_d4459.html

When it is installed, click on 'Windows Install Clean Up' in your Start menu under 'programs' to launch it.
In the list, click on Adobe Reader (nothing else ), which will now be highlighted in blue. Click on Remove, then click on Exit and restart your computer.

To uninstall HP Games:
See if they are are listed in 'windows Install Clean up' (and any of the other programs I listed that are still present on your PC). Try to remove them with this utility, but only one at a time.

Cheers,
Lee
Hi Lee, I followed your instructions (actually this is what I had done already, just didn't explain well enough). I can't get passed deleting an item. What happens is this… I delete, I get a window to confirm that I want to proceed, I click okay, then the famous deleting window appears and just hangs. I have left it for a few hours and when I come back it looks as though it is trying to delete and continues calculating. I then have to do the famous ctrl-alt-del, bring up the task manager and end the task. The item will then be sitting in the recycling bin but when I try to delete it goes through the same nonsense. This applies to everything from deleting to moving files or icons. As for defrag, I had downloaded a Windows program 'Advanced System care' and it actually did some defragmenting. When I tried to run the system degramenter it said everything was fine (?). I ran the disk clean up for both the C and D drive again. Clearly the performance of the laptop is much better since working with Safer Networking and you, but I think something is amiss … what are your thoughts??? Ange
Hi Ange8889,

Please DO NOT use Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility as suggested by Lee above.

While that utility was, for a time, a useful last resort tool, it is known to provoke problems for users who have Office 2007 installed on their machines.

You have Office 2007 installed.
Therefore DO NOT use Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility

We will consider "other" strategies to help you progress toward your solution.

Best Regards
It's important we get the terminology and feedback correct here. Otherwise confusion reigns.
Uninstalling is not the same as deleting

So were you referring to having problems deleting or unstalling a program (programs should be uninstalled, not deleted) in your last post?

You never mentioned if you cleared the IE8 Cache ?

Which of these program have you tried and failed to uninstall?
Adobe Media Player
Acrobat.com
Adobe Community Help
HP Help and Support (obviously not earning it's keep)
Adobe Reader (A 'bloated' program and I suggest replacing with 'Foxit' as previously mentioned).
HP Active Support Library (obviously not earning it's keep either)
My HP Games (if your really into these games, keep them).
HP Quick Launch Buttons
HPTCSSetup

NOTE;
It's important to give us feedback from the instructions we give here. Each and every one of them
Your assessment in your posted replies of the PC situation as you now see it, is (mostly) meaningless to us.
Our assessment of the completion or failure of each and every step we recommended (and a success/failure report from you on all of them), is what is important.
Otherwise we are going nowhere, as we do not have your PC in front of us.

From Doug:

Please DO NOT use Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility

I've checked this out and Dough is right. Microsoft have stopped their support for this program of theirs, as in certain circumstances, Microsoft has found that it can cause OS file damage. I have recommended a safe alternate below.

I would suggest booting to Safe Mode and trying to uninstall from there ( far less processes operating).

If that fails, download Revo Uninstaller freeware and only click on the 'Download Now (2.3MB)" button, not the "Recommended Download" button.
http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/…4-10687648.html

You have a security program that concerns me. Rogers Servicepoint Agent
I have read some disturbing reports about this program and I think it should be removed. Indeed, it might have something to do with some of the PC problems your having.

I would recommend this download as a trouble free and user friendly replacement: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Cheers,
Lee
Sorry if I caused any confusion. 1. I am having trouble deleting icons on the desktop, deleting files and uninstalling programs such as hp games. 2. I followed the instructions and checked the 'empty temporary files…" 3. I can't get passed the first uninstall of any program because it just hangs and 'does not respond.' 4. I heeded your advice and did not install the Microsoft Installer Clean up Utility. 5. I tried to delete in safe mode and have the same behaviour…it just hangs. 6. I'll try the download you suggested and will report back the results. 7. The Rogers Service Point Agent comes with my internet provider should I uninstall Roger's Online Protection and use something else? Ange

7. The Rogers Service Point Agent comes with my internet provider should I uninstall Roger's Online Protection and use something else?

Yes.
Consider
Avast!
or
Microsoft Security Essentials

Best Regards
I just hope Revo Uninstaller works Doug, otherwise, just like the other programs that are trying to be uninstalled, the Rogers Service Point Agent program ain't going nowhere for the time being
