I have been having problems with my computer running slowly in general. But my biggest problem involves my use of Second Life where I perform live music and stream it over the net. I have beeen doing this in Second Life for 2 years and have had no problems. But in the past week or so my sound is freezing and breaking up when I have Second Life open. My cpu is running at 100% when I have this program open, but this has never been a problem before. My computer is also running slowly even outside this program. I know that running Second Life and streaming at hte same time uses a lot of resources, but as I said, I have had no difficulty until recently. Ihave made no changes to my computer or installed anything new that might be affecting things. So I am wondering if I have picked up a hidden Trojan or other malware. My virus scan (Avast) has not turned up anything,

I ran Hijack This and wonder if someone could take a look at the log to see if it shows anything that might be causing the problem. Thanks.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Vista Users

To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows Vista please follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.

Click on the Control Panel menu option.
When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:

If you are in the Classic View do the following:
Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
Click on the View tab.

If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:

I am unsure if this has solved my audio problem with Second LIfe….When running SL and Winamp the CPU still hovers around 100%, but I didn't experience any sound problems. However, I did find previously that the problem increased as I spent more time singing..ie the first 15 minutes of my show were fine and then the sound started breaking up. So hard to know without actually performing an hour show. My browser does seem to run faster…but several of the sites I visit seem to have lost their formatting…the pages do not display correctly now :-( Could I have done something incorrectly when I ran ATF Cleaner?

You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve performance.
Thank you! I had already disabled some start-up programs, but there were some things I couldn't identify and know if it was safe to disable. Startup Lite only identified about 10 items but I hope this will help. Thanks again for your help.

Reboot
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks again for your help. I kept Bonjour running because I freqeuntly access ITunes and think this is required to do that? I now have far less running in the background which is helping. I also turned off my real time virus protection in Avast thinking this might be contributing. I sang a show in SL last night and my sound held up for the duration of the show. I had some sound problems prior to the show and rebooted and that seemed to allow me to sing for an hour. However after the show my sound got wonky again as I tried to listen to another performer. I'd say this was maybe an SL issue but I have been doing this for 2 years without problems and it has only been happening for the last couple of weeks. So things are much better although the problem is not completely solved. I am wondering if maybe it is a network issue…my interenet speed seems to be a little slower than normal. ( when I sing I connect directly and bypass the router so it's not the router that is the issue). Anyway it really is a mystery since I can't think of anything that I have changed on my computer prior to this happening. I appreciate your help and hope getting rid of those background programs is making a difference. If you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for taking the time to help.
