I'm back again, another virus on yet another computer. Saw the killvirus file on a memory stick and the sd card for the camera. Tried to delete the file from the sd card, but the camera says the card is now locked, I guess I can reformat that when I geet rid of the killvirus on the computer. Updated AVG and it found the killvirus, but I have not had it remove it yet, waiting for your instructions Below is DDS.txt DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 16:35:24.06 on Wed 09/22/2010 Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.2180 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_21 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.511.174 [GMT 8:00] AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe c:\program files\common files\logitech\lvmvfm\LVPrcSrv.exe C:\Program Files\ANI\ANIWZCS2 Service\ANIWZCSdS.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgwdsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ChgService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\crypserv.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgchsvx.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgrsx.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgcsrvx.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgnsx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb09.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\CameraAssistant.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ElkCtrl.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG9\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\HSPA USB Modem\USB Modem.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\Documents and Settings\end-user\My Documents\Downloads\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://goggleonline.blogspot.com/ uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uWindow Title = Microsoft Internet explorer mDefault_Page_URL = hxxp://www.msn.com mDefault_Search_URL = hxxp://www.google.com/ie mSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com mSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s mSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie mWinlogon: Userinit=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,c:\windows\system32\wscript.exe c:\windows\system32\killvirus.vbs BHO: Yahoo! Hi gaia1995,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Following is the Malwarebytes report. The killvirus message on the computer has disappeared, the computer starts up a bit faster, but still slow closing down. The lock of the sd card was a different problem, that has been solved. The sd card in the pda still makes the pda turn itself on, but I will reformat the card to get rid of killvirus on that card. Also noticed we had a google redirect when using Windows Explorer. Only use that when we want to sent pictures as it does minimize them automatically, normally we use Google Chrome. Have updated the Explorer and the redirect seems to have disappeared as well. This computer is old and it really is our backup which had to be put into action when our netbook was stolen a few weeks ago. Normally this computer is not on the internet, so we had gotten a bit careless with not updating our antivirus or Internet Explorer. gaia1995,

Let's run another tool.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Ran ComboFix with a few glitches, eg forgot to turn off AVG, but no problems.

gaia1995,

It looks like maybe you've been messing with drivers? Maybe you've had some trouble? I don't see anything wrong but… if you've had trouble, I'd just like to recommend that you always go to the site of the manufacturer of your computer when needing drivers. They are usually the most reliable… and they are virtually always safe.

You've got some remnants of old Java installs in there. They need to go as they are vulnerable to attack.

Kaspersky does take quite a while. I'd suggest that you let it run while you don't need to use the computer (maybe while your asleep?).
Hi Tomsk I have now tried many times to run Kaspersky scan but my internet connection is very iffy here. Once it lasted for about 2.5 hours and I managed to download about 120 megabytes but then it just drops the connection. And then when I try again, after rebooting to get my connection going again, it starts downloading everything again from the beginning. So could we continue without the Kaspersky scan as it just does not seem possible to do here. Thanks Gaia1995
gaia1995, The point of the Kaspersky scan was a "double-check" to make sure I didn't miss anything. However… I do understand the issue with "hinky" internet connections. Please provide me a new DDS log and let me know how everything seems on your end.
Thanks Tomk, it was very frustrating to try to download Kaspersky and not be able to run it. I did find out yesterday that selecting a different option for the mobile broadband we are using may prevent the disconnecting, but it will be slower. Any way things are looking up here. No more killvirus message and the startup and shutting down are not as slow as before we believe. I have also bought some additional memory to install when I get the all clear from you. gaia1995,

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hi Tomk Have cleaned up as you requested. And went to read How did I get infected. Tried to download spyware blaster, but of course my connection dropped again. Will have to try it early in the morning or late at night. But you can consider this as solved. Thanks for your help. Now to install the memory and I will have a clean and hopefully faster computer. Thanks again, Gaia 1995
