Hello, Have not been able to boot since forced shut down. Now after pushing the start button it goes directly to "Windows Error Recovery" screen. When choosing to start normally the loading bar comes up and then a blue screen flash for a second then loops back to the Windows Error Recovery screen again. When I try the System Recovery Options it does no list any OS, and not sure which/if any drivers to load. If I bypass and hit next it does go to the SR Options menu, but the Startup Repair and Command Prompt (trying "chkdsk") did not work, also have the OS CD and tried booting and System Recovery that way but did not work either. This is a Dell E1705 laptop. Is this a simple fix that I'm just not getting? Thanks for any help! Blayz
Sounds like the hard drive is going bad. You can download and run the drive diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturers web site. It will be a .iso file that you use to create a bootable CD from. If you do not have your data backed up, now is the time to do it, before the drive fails completely. Once you have your data backed up, then run the drive diag and see what it tells you.
Hard Drive Diagnostics checked out with no errors. I looked at some of the preventative maintenance tricks on the site, but it would also seem that running the chkdsk periodically is not a bad idea either, in order to repair bad clusters and such before it gets out of hand and starts to really damage the hardware.
