I should tell you that I ran chkdsk last week and also ran some disk diagnostics from Seagate, all showed hard disk is in good health.

I understand but I just want to make sure we are covering everything that may be causing this issue.
So tried another screensaver, but same problem, after leaving computer unused for 1 hour , screen was almost frozen, just jerking accross screen. rgds
OK that means something different.. jerking is not freezing.
Lets take alook at some things.
Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages…

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"
Well it does very slowly jerk accross the screen, but usualy ends up freezing .
here are the reports ( you already checked the temps and said they were ok, but attached again anyway:

First issue I see right away and may be the root of all your problems.

System Memory 512 MB (DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM)

Although this may have been well enough memory in the past with the adding of new programs and autoruns increasing plus startups in msconfig the amount of available memory has decreased.
Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Second issue that could become a issue is this.
Partitions:

C: (NTFS) 57231 MB (9105 MB free)

You have less then 20% of your HD free. At 15% you take the risk of your MBR becoming corrupted. This will cause bootup issue and eventually cause the system to stop booting completely.
What I would suggest is Uninstalling All Programs you don't need or don't want anymore through Add/Remove Programs

Do this by going to
Start and then to Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Carefully choose the program(s) you don't need
Click on each Program then click Change/Remove and Follow the Uninstall Instructions

You may be prompted to Restart your computer.
Restart once you have all the programs you don't need uninstalled.
Be careful not to remove anything needed by your computer, some of which you may be unfamiliar with the name,

The next issue you need to be aware of is to Backup your Data Files.
For this I would suggest using a External Hard Drive Enclosure. This will allow you to keep your Important Data safe and Separated from the main system in case of problems.
The cost for this kind of Backup System has come down a lot. I would suggest a 500 Gig capacity for your needs.
Since you will only be Backing Up Data Files Only this should be sufficient to do that for you. Follow the next two links to see examples of the price you will be looking at.
    HERE
    HERE
    [/list
I suggest going to Microsofts Backup Tutorial and follow the steps to do a Backup to a External Drive and also it will guide you on how to do a Scheduled Backup even at night.

Another way you can do a Backup is by using DVD’s. This method is just as effective and can be done using the same steps as above.
Please let me know if I can answer any further questions you may have as I am always happy to assist.
Yes I had thought about increasing the RAM memory to 1500 Mb, so think I will do that. I understand what partitioning the hard drive means, but do not know why that was done on this machine and what is in each partition , whether there is information in each section, or whether the partition can be removed, etc. Does it mean that I only have one part of the drive that I am using, and how does it decide which section to put the information in. Also as I said back in my original posting, I do not understand where so much space has been used up , I have another machine with the same programs/ information on which has only used 23 Gb and yet this one says it has used 47 Gb. So in terms of required disk space, I should only be using 23 Gb and so should have about 34 Gb (up to 57 Gb ) still free. This is what I do not understand. rgds
I can try to explain the partitions for you. Try this and I can see what you are seeing.
Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

Attach it to your next reply
OK all i see is one partition which is your Main drive
It contains your OS and all programs and data.
There has to ne a partition setup even if it is only the main partition. This tells the system how much space to allocate for the OS and files. With larger drive capacity some will setup more then one partition to run the OS on a partition by itself and the data is saved to the other partition. If something was to happen to the OS then the data would be safe on the other partition.
This is a great way to secure your data but won't work if the drive mechanically fails.
In my case I have 3 HD's in my system.
Main drive is partitioned into 3 and each one has a different OS on it.
  • Win XP Pro 64 bit
  • Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
  • Mandiva Linux Pro 64 bit

All my data is save to 2 other drives I have installed in my system.
Increasing your ram to 1 gig you will see a significant speed increase in how your system runs. Not knowing what the results of your Crucial Online Scanner was I can't tell you what thebest option is for memory. I can also try to find you pricing on the type and amount of memory you can get.
Please feel free to ask any other questions and I will try to answer them for you.
📎Crucial_Scan.JPGHI The crucial memory scan is attached, but I thought my laptop computer came with two 256 Mb memory cards rather than one at 512Mb. The outstanding question I still have is about why my system says it has used 47 Gb of the hard disk but it should only have about 23 Gb of data on it - can you help me with that please.
Data is one thing but programs are another.
You very well may only have 23 gigs of data on your system but the actual programs that use that data also take up room.
Try downloading WinDir and run the program. Please get a screenshot of the results window and attach it to your next reply.
Your system has a 60 gig hd with only 8.8 gigs free.

2. I have taken over this work computer and now use it for personal home use only. It was set up with administrator and several user accounts, but I have just logged in on the Administrator account.

:whistling:
Ok, that's the program I needed, I can immediately see where about 24Gb can be removed. There are 8Gb of Outlook Bak files which were created in trying to fix an Outlook problem caused by Malware which has now been removed and resolved, so these are not needed. There are 12Gb of iTunes I appear to have inherited with taking over the computer. Also there is a Guest folder as well as All Users and Administrator, I do not need the Guest account /folder and would like to remove this at 3.8Gb - can you advise me how to do that ? here is the log: 📎Windows_Directory_log.JPG Memory question: If I have two 256Mb memory cards in the two slots, can I change the laptop external slot one for a 1Gb card , giving me a total of 1.25Gb ? I do not want to start stripping the computer to access the internal slot so that I can put in equal size cards (2 x 512Mb)
