I am using XP Prof.SP3 with Office 2003 on a HP laptop nx8220 with a 60GB hard disk.
I have several isues I would like help with:-
1. When left unattended the computer does into Screensaver which is fine. However the moving image often goes slowly and erratically or stops and it is hard to get it out of screensaver which can take several minutes. If left for much longer it eventually sorts itself out and the image runs fine and one touch of the pad returns it to desktop. How can I get rid of this hang.
2. I have taken over this work computer and now use it for personal home use only. It was set up with administrator and several user accounts, but I have just logged in on the Administrator account.
It has 60GB hard disk which it says has 47GB of the 55GB space used up, but I am not sure why it has so much space used. I have about 18 GB of personal files and there are about 3.5 GB of program files.
I can see that C:/Docs & Settings/ Administrator uses 15 GB of space but can only see about 5GB of files within this folder. There are some duplicate folders in C:/ but not that take up much space.
I have another laptop with the same programs and personal files which uses only 23GB total space on the drive, so something has gobbled up many GB on the above computer
How can I see what is using all the space.
Can I easily remove any of the accounts or is it better left well alone
Can I safely remove some of the duplicate folders if I am sure they are just duplicates.
Help with the above issues would be very much appreciated.
kind regards

Download Autoruns from the HERE:
1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.
Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages…

Hi rshaffer61,
Not sure what's going on with Autoruns, and could be a mistake on my end.
The version of autoruns that you link doesn't seem to have an Export function.
Whereas the version that I've been using (downloaded it in 2009) does have the Export functin
Here's a screen shot of Autoruns from the download you provide
📎Autoruns_no_Export.jpg
Thank you I will find the newer version to link to now.
The newest version I find is 10.01 available HERE
I hope this is the right one and I apologize for the older link.
No need for "sorry".
You've made no mistake.
I think you have provided the most up to date link.
(note: after you have 5 post count, we'll be able to PM this type of consultation/discussion or handle it in Tech Helper private forum)
It "may" be a problem on my part.
But I've now switched from my XP Home SP3 machine over to my Vista Ultimate SP2 machine.
And, I'm still getting the same results of not being able to Export.
Additionally, the "Help" option does list: "saving, loading, and exporting" as a help topic, but link does not complete to the autoruns help website.
Wonder what is up with Autoruns?
My own "older version" still has the Export feature.
That is strange as I have used these instructions for awhile with no problems on sister site.
As soon as it is back online I will update my signature with all my links and then everything should be completely up to date.

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
Download Auslogics Defrag from the HERE
In my opinion is better because:
It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Let us know how everything is running when all steps are complete.
screenshot:
sorry you will have to tell me how to get and post a screenshot.
I tried pressing fn + prt sc keys and then ctrl + V to paste but that did not work.
Also tried putting it into Word and then copy and then ctrl + V into reply box, but that did not work either.
Ok, all steps done.
I have recently run defrag , so it only defragmented my Outlook files, took just 7 mins.
I run CleanUp at least once a week so there is little junk on my system most of the time, have not run it for a couple of weeks now since messing with the computer, so it removed about 170 Mb.
Whist viewing the defrag log, my system went into screensaver, first the screen went just black for about a minute and a half or so with an egg timer showing, then it showed the image frozen whilst I waited for it to react to my pad tapping to take me back to log.
By the way I may as well tell you what the temps were that I could not post:
Motherboard 51*C (124*F)
CPU 57*C (135*F)
Seagate ST960822A 37*C (99*F)
Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.
To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
Temps are not to bad and I don't think that is the issue.
Lets try some fixs and see what happens.
Go to Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter …It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot…click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation This one will take longer then chkdsk /f
Note… there are 5 stages…
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area…this is normal… DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.
