Hi,

Did you uninstall the HP Printer from Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel , I am still looking at it installed ? Do that and then reboot. Then go to start >run and type in Services.msc then press enter, then look for the HP printer software if its listed, ( it may be gone after the uninstall , right click on it and go to properties and set it to stop…ok your way out.
We can reinstall the printer software when we're done

You can enter Safemode with Network Support and download and run GMER right in safemode. I would like to see this report so we can determine if there is a hidden rootkit infection causing you all these problems or if it was indeed caused by updating the HP drivers

Forgot to mention that the Immunization feature in Spybot just blocks 1000s of bad sites from installing cookies and downloads on your system, when we're done you should enable that

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.
In the ADD REMOVE file, I was able to find the following listed HP-related items. The one I was most inclined to delete was "HP Deskjet Preloaded Printer Drivers". However, it did not have an Add/Remove option available, and neither did many others have the Add/Remove option available. Keeping in mind that my CPU is also HP, I don't want to get carried away and delete anything that might impair the CPU, so I am sending you this list so you can tell me which HP items to delete. I have indicated which items DID have the Add/Remove option available – the items without the Add/Remove option have been left blank.

HP Customer Participation Program 7.0 Add/Remove Option Available

HP Deskjet Preloaded Printer Drivers

HP Image Zone 4.2 Add/Remove Option Available

HP Imaging Device Functions 7.0 Add/Remove Option Available

HP Photo and Imaging 2.0 - Photosmart Cameras

HP Product Detection Add/Remove Option Available

HP Solution Center 7.0 Add/Remove Option Available

HP Unload DLL Patch

THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW:

1) I run Spybot at least twice a week (until recently in the past week or so because I've only been following your instructions), and try to remember to update it at least every two days (same w/Malwarebytes).

2) The Symantec stuff has been there forever, and I've used my current AV programs from the beginning, so I'm not sure if that seems like a viable variable to consider – it seems unlikely that it would be the culprit after being a non-troublemaker for so long, and then suddenly cause problems with my AV – however, it does seem somewhat likely that the HP download/updates along with the new Wifi connection (I was a broadband user till the troubles began) could've triggered the Symantec remnants to do something weird. That's just my uneducated opinion though. I will remove the Symantec this afternoon.

3) Last night's ESET did not find any threats – however, I was able to look in the ESET quarantine box and see the full names of the trojans that were dealt with on the 28th (from the scanlog I lost):
(i) C:\Program Files\Updates fromHP\13790\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
(ii) C:\Program Files\AOL\Installers\ASP 2.0\setup.exe

4) I still don't see a way to save the results, or logfile, of an ESET scan to notepad (or save it to anywhere else for that matter). I wasn't able to find C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt – just found the ESET folder, with a bunch of items listed, but none of them had the ending that you indicated.

Thank you again, and I look forward to further instructions as to which HP items to delete from ADD/REMOVE.
This is what I would do,

First run the Symantec removal tool that will scan your system and remove any remnants of Symantec.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

Now, we don't do hardware or windows issues on this forum, we just do malware removal , so I would like you to post in our hardware forum, let them know that you updated your printer and there has been non stop problems since, let them help you completely uninstall all of HP, then reinstall the proper HP software. See if that fixed the problem and if not come back to this forum and run GMER and lets see if something running on your system is hiding from us.

I ran the Symantec tool without difficulty – hopefully that took care of that issue. As for GMER, well, that was just as much of a nightmare as it was before (even though it was all done in "Safemode with Networking" this time): The first time I ran it, Friday, I started the scan at approximately 11 am – when I got home at the end of the day it was still running, and into the night, and I went to bed. When I woke up Saturday morning, at 9 am, I moved the mouse but nothing happened – the screensaver would not disappear and reveal the screen. I changed the battery in the mouse a few times and I shook the mouse for the better part of an hour and then started hitting the up/down/right/left keys – after doing this for about 10 minutes, the screen was revealed and I could see the GMER scan was complete. I tried to move the mouse to "Save" but the pointer was frozen in the form of an hourglass and wouldn't move. I tried to make the up/down/right/left keys go to "Save" but they would only go back and forth between highlighting "Cancel" and "OK". I sat in indecision for a long time, and then the screensaver came back on, and there was nothing I could do to get it to reveal the screen again; at this point I just turned the *^#@ thing off. I had to restart it several times before it would go into safemode – this took at least an hour (everything takes at least an hour) – once I was able, and it restarted into "Safemode with Networking" I resolved to start all over. I started the second GMER scan at 11 am on Saturday morning – I thought perhaps staying with the machine and keeping the screen alive (and not letting the screensaver come on) might be the answer, so I SAT WITH THE THING UNTIL 2 IN THE MORNING TO KEEP THE SCREEN ALIVE – IT TOOK 13 HOURS TO SCAN!!!!! When the scan finally ended and I was there to witness it having kept the mouse alive – 13 hours later – I was so pleased to be able to see it happen and felt sitting there all day and night was worth it to not have let the mouse/pointer die/freeze:) So, I pressed "Save" and a loud beep sounded and a box with a big red "X" in it appeared and read: "C:\DocumentsandSettings\Owner\My Documents is not accessible. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." I was stricken. I sat for about 20 minutes thinking then hit "Okay". I was shocked and excited to see a Save Box presented to me, with a field to enter a name and below that the type I wanted to save it as (the default was something other than "txt" so I was planning to change that after typing in "ark"). I grabbed the mouse and it froze into an hourglass. However I saw that the prompt was blinking in the "File name" field. Sadly, even though the prompt was blinking in the "File name" field, no letters would appear when I typed – the arrow remained frozena nd the prompt continued to blink, but nothing ever happened after 2 hours of trying. I was forced to hit the CPU off button and shut it down. I have lost 3 full days of work over these 2 GMER scans – I don't mind doing it again, but you're going to have to help me come up with a way to do it without sitting with it (I just can't sit here for 13 hours – ever again – that was torture), and you're going to have to tell me what to do when things freeze and/or won't type. Please, please, please help:(
Did you post in the other forum for your printer, was that resolved ? Lets leave GMER alone for the time being

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
No – I have not resolved the HP printer issue in the other forum because posting in this forum is a formidable enough challenge – just getting the computer up and running, getting online, then getting into my email account, and into this forum – let alone trying to type anything (sometimes typing is simply completely disabled) – takes hours. So once I am finally able to get through all that – let alone executing all the tasks you so graciously provide me with – I've got to get over to Kinkos (which is really far away) so I can use their computer to get some work done. I will attempt to execute your new instructions later today, or tonight. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH FOR HANGING IN THERE WITH ME – I AM OPTIMISTIC FOR A HAPPY COMPUTER FUTURE!
Okay – well, it's taken me this much time to try to download TFC 3 times, and it appears to be impossible. I clicked the link you provided, then the subsequent appropriate choices ("run", etc.), and it finally gives me an error message box, with a big red X, that reads: "TFC cannot be run from a temporary folder! Please download it to your desktop or other suitable location." However there is no way to choose where you want to save it when the download option appears – the only option is "run" or "don't run". Please advise. Thank you.

You had and still have some serious infections on this system, all the programs under the ………..AWF………..heading are infected with a file infector, this infection take the legit file and replaces it with there own infected copy, running this script should restore those files. You may have to try running some of those programs after this fix and if they wont run or give you a problem they will have to be uninstalled and reinstalled fresh

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above AWF::

AWF::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
I knew it – I just knew something was drastically wrong – and now you do too – I'm so glad you stuck with me! Thank you!!

So now I need to understand some things before I begin the next task:

I'm sorry – I don't understand what this means:

"copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above Rootkit"

To be more specific:
1) I have no problem highlighting the text inside the codebox you provided
2) I do not understand if something should happen when I press CTRL C after I've highlighted the code (nothing does)
3) I have no problem copying the highlighted text in the codebox you provided
4) I have no problem copying then pasting (after I've pressed CTRL C) the highlighted text from the codebox into Notepad
5) I do not understand at all what "" means – there is no word "Rootkit" within the text inside the codebox

Please advise. Thanks again.
My bad on the Rootkit, I failed to change the wording, I just fixed it. Basically all your going to do is highlight all the text inside the codebox by any means that you know, you can also highlight it all with your mouse and right click and select Copy, then paste it into Notepad , then follow the instructions to name it and drag it into CF and CF will start again with the script. Just start copying from AWF::, do not include the word Code
attached please find the cobmbofix log – your uploader won't let me upload the hijackthis log – i get an error message reading:
"Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file" – please advise. thank you.

trying to send the hijackthis log again produces the same error/failure to upload.

However, I figured out to cut/copy/paste the log. So I did a hijackthis scan after the combofix thing – then I rebooted – then AFTER the reboot I did another hijackthis log. I will post them both here now – first, the one that occurred after the combofix thing:
