Computer progressively getting worse

Internet Connection = newly installed Verizon MiFi (installed about 8 weeks ago).

Spybot reads clear of infection (although I admit I don't understand Spybot's "Immune" feature).
Housecall notifies that there are no threats.
Malwarebytes registers viruses about once a week and Adaware logs viruses (trojans, mostly, I think) every few days for the past 6 weeks or so.
AVG registers no infection most of the time, but has caught a couple of trojans/viruses in the past 6 weeks (but I don't really understand AVG anymore since they changed it)

None of the AVs register a threat on the same day (e.g.: if Malwarebytes shows trojans, Adaware shows no infections.)

Most days + today: ALL AVs are registering as clear/free of infection/threat. However, even though there seems to be no infections, my computer acts progressively odder & does new & different weird things everyday.

Recently my hp officejet all-in-one printer print feature no longer works (ever since I downloaded the "fix" hp sent me to "cure" my inability to install/download updates); after clicking all the usual "print" options, it ultimately wants to save in "My Pictures" instead of printing (but there's nothing to save & nothing happens when you click ok) - there is no way to bypass this, so printing has abruptly ceased.

Trying to do anything is a nightmare - I've been trying to get to you since yesterday, and finally I'm able. I hope you can help. The following is a recent Hijackthis log. Thank you.

Hijackthis has become somewhat outdated and we don't use it much anymore, it shows clear of infections but other scanners may pick something else up that HJT can't.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.com
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.pif
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control Here
I clicked DDS.scr – it eventually went to what looked like a DOS screen, and then two scan logs came up which I saved to my desktop. There was no "Optional_Scan" offered. There also were no "instructions that pop up for posting the results".

You instruct: "Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet."
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what, or if, I "downloaded" any "tool" – I know a scan or scans have been run, and I have the 2 report/logs saved to my desktop.

Do you want me to delete those 2 report/logs that I saved to my desktop? I will attach those 2 report/logs in case you want to see them. If not, please advise.

Thank you so much for helping.

Hi,

Nothing really jumping out at me that would cause the problems your having.. Lets check deeper, this log will open in Notepad, just open it and go to edit> select all……..edit copy and paste it into this thread.

In the picture it show the sections tab as being unchecked, leave that one checked please

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If this program crashes, try running it in Safemode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
Wow – you're awesome! Okay – I'll do what you say, but it's going to take me a while. In the meantime, you should know that I've had fewer problems since I unplugged the printer. Seems everything went monumentally haywire when hp sent me that update download and the printer stopped working. Do you think the hp update thing they sent me (which took a long, long time to download, and ultimately corrupted printing) could be the culprit here? Is there anything I can send you so you can see why I can't print anymore, or what hp sent me in those updates? Thanks again, and I'll get back to you after I figure out how to execute your instructions:)
W-O-W . . . . what a NIGHTMARE! So, for days I have been attempting to follow your instructions . . . it has been awful. First, I tried to download gmer from the first "here" link you provided (the "geeks" site); everything crashed badly, and it took 2 days to get back up and online. When I finally got everything working again, I tried to download gmer from the second "here" link you provided (the "military guy" site); that caused an even worse crash.

Note: after clicking on each "here", and before the crash, there was nothing to "unzip" – when I clicked "gmer.exe" I got a warning entitled: "FILE DOWNLOAD SECURITY WARNING", and the text of the warning read: The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software? . . . This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers you trust." Then offered two options: "Run" and "Cancel" – I chose "Run" – that's when everything crashed (the second time). (I did not write down everything that happened the first time, but I did the second time.)

So then, that's when I tried SAFEMODE, but once there, I couldn't find gmer anywhere – I looked it's not in CONTROL PANEL; ADD/REMOVE; a SEARCH produces "zero results found"; it's not in ALL PROGRAMS; and I can't get on the Internet in safemode so I can't get to your links or any of the other places where gmer is to download it – it's literally impossible to load gmer on my computer, and now the computer is worse than it ever.

Anyway, I JUST NOW got back up and running and online from that, but with all kinds of more damage (my AdAware is now broken among other things – it took 12 hours to deinstall it and reinstall it but it didn't help).

I need this computer to work, and to print, and it virtually does nothing – please, PLEASE help:(
Hi,

Sorry your still having problems. GMER acts differently on some systems, some systems do crash but there is no damage done, GMER is just a scanner, it doesn't delete or remove any flles.

Try running these and post the logs

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
I want to be perfectly clear before I move on: You DO NOT want the log file from the OTL scan? Once the OTL scan completes and shows me the log file in Notepad, you want me to close the OTL scan in Notepad, and THEN log back into WhatTheTech and find your link to the ESET scan and then do the ESET scan and send you ONLY THAT log file? Please confirm. Thank you again for your ongoing commitment to quality support.
Good Morning,

No, I do want to see the OTL log, the initial scan wont remove anything, the log will open in Notepad, just copy and paste it into this thread for me to see, you can do this first. Then go ahead and run ESET and post that log also
Okay, great – I can do that! Here are both the "OTL log" that posted to my desktop, plus the "Extras" that opened in notepad simultaneously.

I will attach them too for further clarification. Now I will do the the ESET scan and provide you with those results thereafter. Thanks!

[PS: Your uploader won't upload the OTL attachments, so that didn't happen.]

Hi

Nothing jumping out at me that is malicious. If you can run this free online virus scanner and if it comes back clean i will link you to our windows forum for help

It looks like you are using AVG for your antivirus but I see entries that you may have had Symantec installed at one time and it may not have been removed completely, this can cause you problems, you can run this removal tool that will remove all of Symantec
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

You will need to boot to safemode with networking

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Okay - I ran the ESET scan. The options you told me to check ("found threats" and "scan unwanted applications") weren't exactly there - there were 2 options showing: 1. Remove found threats 2. Scan archives "Remove found threats" was ticked by default, and I equated that to be "found threats" so I felt satisfied that one was covered. Below those 2 options, there was a live link that said "Advanced Settings" so I clicked it to see if I could see something that might equate to "Scan unwanted applications". There were 4 more options available: 1. Scan for potentially unwanted applications 2. Scan for potentially unsafe applications 3. Enable Anti-Stealth technology 4. Use custom proxy settings 2 of those 4 options were ticked by default: "Scan for potentially unwanted Applications" and "Enable Anti-Stealth technology". I left everything as default and changed nothing (satisfied that "Scan for potentially unwanted applications" was the one you wanted me to tick). When I woke up this morning, I found the scan results: "THREATS FOUND & CLEANED!" Scanned files: 151025 Infected files: 2 Cleaned files: 2 Total scan time: 02:56:13 Scan status: finished >List of found threats: (1) Target C:\Program Files\AOL\Installers\ASP…… Threat probably a variant of WIN32/Agent troj……. Action cleaned by deleting - quarantined (2) Target C:\Program Files\Updates fromHP\1…… Threat probably a variant of WIN32/Agent troj……. Action cleaned by deleting - quarantined I looked all over the box to try to find a way to save it (to notepad or otherwise), but the only action available was to "Finish" - so I figured that would bring me to a place where I could save, but it just brought me to a place where I could buy the product. I wasn't surprised to see these "WIN32/Agent" trojans, because they look like the same two that keep showing up in my AVG, AdAware and Malwarebytes results. The HP one looks like it could be related to those nightmare "fixes" that HP sent me to "solve" my inability to download HP printer update problems (something I have suspected all along). I am sorry I lost the results of the ESET scan, but I'm sure if you give it a day the trojans will all be back. Or, is there a way to retrieve the results of last night's ESET scan? Please advise. Thanks, thanks, and thanks again:)
OHMYGOSH - I have just spent the last 7 hours trying to post a reply to you – put a lot of effort into writing the reply, and giving you information and waiting for the thing while it froze and stalled and disappeared and reappeared (and all kinds of other weird stuff that the computer is doing) – and after finally hitting "add reply" for the 15th time (it just never went – I'd go do something else for a half hour and it still wouldn't go), it finally made my message to you vanish and gave me a message something to the effect of "if you don't know how to use this forum go to . . . " – HELP! I'M SO CRIPPLED AND MY WORK AND MY WHOLE LIFE IS SUFFERING BADLY:(
