:pullhair: Okay this is driving me nuts! My computer is having very very bad slow down issues. I began a scan with Macafee, thinking it may be a virus, and when it gets to 84% it just keeps scanning C:\...\ieui.dll This has gone on for over an hour now and I am using my wife's computer to write this because mine is still doing the scan. I am sorry that this may seem as vague, but I can't do anything on my laptop because of how slow it is being right now. That is all the info I can really give right now. Yesterday it was fine, as previously it was slow, then I rebooted and it was okay, but today, it is driving me off of the deep end!!!!! Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Thanks and I hope to hear from someone very soon, before I pull my hair out of my head....... Okay now it is working again, but I had to cancel the scan, it was just taking so long for one file. If you need more info, please let me know while I can still use this thing. Thank you all, you have been very helpful before!

Nman, Hi and welcome to the WTT forums.

Sorry to hear of the problems with your machine.

1. Reading over your post I see you were running a scan. Do you think that your system may be infected?
2. Was the system running fine prior to running the scan or did it start slowing down over a period of time.

Seeing that the system hung up at that point of the scan is making me think you might be infected or have a Malware issue because of Malware, Virus ECT. can cause file corruptions. I would like to suggest that you have the system check out by the malware team to be sure your system is clean. Here is the link of what to do.

http://forums.whatth...lp_t106388.html

Once the malware team can check out your system to be sure that you are ok and the computer is not infected and afterwards your still having the slow down problems, please come back here to post to recive help.

Regards,
Jimbo1

Yes, I thought it was infected because of the random slow downs it is having on and off. So I ran the scan. It had never done that before, stopped on a file. So they I started to get worried. I will go check out that Malware team now, thanks for your help! :)

Okay so it seems that it is not a virus or anything of the sort, so do you guys have any idea what it may be. Registry error, corrupt file? It still stops on the same file, so not sure what could be wrong. Let me know if you need any more information about this.

Okay so I just did a full search on my computer (had no idea I could do such an in depth search, I am computer illiterate!!!!) for ieui.dll, and when I did, McAfee popped up, the real time scanning was turned off some how. But that aside, here is the search results, is this normal? weird.JPG weird2.JPG I could not copy and paste the text, and doing this search almost froze my lap top. So here is what I am wondering, what is up with all of those files, the look all the same! Should this be so? It looks a little weird to me (though I am no computer expert). I had to stop the search, it was causing problems, but this is what I was able to get.

After reading over the post in the Malware section I am kinda leaning on possible file corruptions, asking other tech of their thoughts in this matter. As you said It looks a little weird to me (though I am no computer expert). I had to stop the search, it was causing problems, but this is what I was able to get. Jimbo

While I am wainting for answers, a few questions? 1. Is the system still locking up or crashing? 2. or does it crash when trying to run the scans or other apps? 3. If not running the scans does the system run ok with anything that you are using? Jimbo1

To answer your questions, it runs fine now when not running a scan or a search for ieui.dll. However when running a scan it still locks up on that file and freezes the computer, and I had to stop the search yesterday to keep it from crashing. Other than that it is running better.

1. I notice in the last thread that you were not using IE and it was not the current version. If IE is not up to date, then go ahead and update IE and try running it to be sure its working ok. (may fix the ieui.dll file if its corrupted) 2. Once you get IE updated and working, lets try running the McAfee scan in Safe Mode first, to see if it will complete the scan. 3. if it does complete the scan safe more, then try running the scan in normal mode. Please report back with the results. By doing this were trying to see if its the file or possible McAfee could be causing the problems, if so buy having the updated IE we are going to try and do some online scans. but do the above first.

For number one, IE still works (I tested it) but I wanted to know if there was a way to get an update for it that isn't IE8, Vicki had a lot of trouble with it on her computer and it took forever to get it uninstalled to get her computer back to normal. She actually had to call microsoft and have them walk her through it, we don't want to go through that again. So if there is another way, then please let me know. If I have to get IE8, I will, though it pains me to think of that, lol. I just don't want it taking over my computer like it did her's. Once I hear back from you, I will proceed. Thanks!

For the time run the scan in safe mode to see what it does and let us know the results. We are trying to see what the cause is, McAfee or the possible corrupted file in IE, if it is the dll file for IE then its messed up, so upgrading to IE 8 may fix it again the word here is it may fix it. But for the time lets do step 1.

1. But we want to run the scan in safe mode first. before going to the second step.

2. Using IE to run a online scanner requires you to use Internet Explorer because they need to install an ActiveX component to run the scan.

Okay so I had already updated to IE8 (and for some reason did not have the same issues my wife had, which is good) so I ran the scan again, in safe mode. This time it got to 85%, but was still on ieui.dll and froze.... again. I will try those online scans if you would like, do I just click on the link using IE?

yes try those online scanners, if you upgraded to ie 8 and its doing ok and you have no trouble. Trying to see now if it may be a problem with McAfee. Please post the results.
