System:
ACER ASPIRE ONE
OS: XP SP3
1.6GHZ INTEL ATOM, 1GB RAM

Problem:
Internet Explorer 8 will not start, no error messages display. (IE did load prior to removing MCAFEE and installing Microsoft Security Essentials)

History:
Computer was purchased at Christmas time, MCAFEE was pre-installed and the trial subscription ran out sometime in March 2010. CPU use was 40+ % even at idle. I removed MCAFEE and cpu usage went way down 4-5% at idle. I turned on Windows firewall, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and ran a full system scan after it updated. The anti-virus found and removed an item: VirTool:JS/Obfuscator.gen!A. I also ran Microsofts Malware removal tool and it found nothing.
At the time IE7 was installed on the system, I installed IE8 thinking there might be a corrupt file and had the same results with IE8 (not working). However I opened task manager and looked at the processes and found Internet Explorer running a couple of times (I clicked (the IE icon) it twice thinking I didn't get the double click on it the first time. I downloaded Firefox from another PC and installed it via flash drive. FF appears to run just fine.

I downloaded HIJACKTHIS and ran a scan and saved the results to a text file. Here is the contents of the scan:

Any ideas, help would be greatly appreciated. This is a friends PC and I told him I would try to fix it.

Here is the two DDS files. I am working on the GMER file and I will add that to another post.
Thank you.

Update:

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you try this:

Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 to return to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP

Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 8 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

Remove IE 8
LDTate, First thank you for your time, it is greatly appreciated. I uninstalled IE8 and there was still an icon on the desk top for IE. For the heck of it I clicked on it and IE6 loaded ( I believe it was IE6 as there was not tabbed browsing). I exited IE and then tried to restart it. I got a few seconds of the hour glass and then nothing. I clicked on processes (thru task manager) and saw that iexplorer was running. I ended process and was not able to get IE to run again. I downloaded IE7 and installed that, and again I got it to work the first time I started it after the install but cannot get it started again even after a reboot (this was the same for both IE6 and IE7, I don't believe IE8 loaded after a reboot either). In all cases the browser loaded once then that was it. Thanks.
Lets get rid of the stuff you don't need to run at startup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate,
Below is the current HijackThis log.
The computer appears to be operating the same as before I removed some of the programs that were running at start-up. No luck with IE7 starting.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again!

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you โ€“ please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Okay I ran through the sequence of steps except for the clearing the Java cache. I don't see that Java is loaded on this machine.
Below is the log for Combofix.exe .

Now on to some good news. IE7 starts up when I click on the icon. I have tried this several times and there are no issues with the program starting up. I'm going to post this message and restart the computer to make sure IE still is working. I'll edit this post in a few minutes to confirm success or failure.

edit (a few minutes later): IE7 continues to work as well as Firefox. XP firewall back on, Microsoft Essentials up and running along with Spybot.

If everything continues to work fine I am hoping you can look at the log below and identify possibly what was removed that may have stopped IE from starting and what type of virus/malware or other program it was.

My friend is going to be very happy things are up and running. I will wait to hear back from you in case there is anything else I need to do. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
