[Resolved] IE Launches by itself, McAfee gets disabled

XP Pro, 2.6 P4, 1GB RAM

I use Firefox, but in the last few days, machine started running slow, and saw that IE was starting on its own and loading various web pages, example: bestdietforme.com, giftcardsurveys.us.com. Saw an XP message that the firewall was off (it had been on), auto updates were OFF (they had been on), and Virus detection was off (I use McAfee VirusScan.. I saw that McAfee "on access scan" was disabled (it had been enabled).

I ran Spybot Search and Destroy, cleaned up a few things. I ran a complete virus scan with McAfee.. it found some problems including 2 Trojans. The machine seemed better (that was yesterday).

Today, we found McAfee "on access: scan was disabled again. Turned it back on, and later found another Trojan.

Later I again saw IE launching unannounced and loading web pages.

Getting frustrated, I poked around on the web and was led to HiJackThis and this web forum.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Please also post an updated HijackThis log and let me know how it's running.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi IndiGenus,

Thanks for helping. I followed all directions. log files follow. Machine seems somewhat better… but I still see signs of infection. Spyboot is reporting attempted registry changes, and I just saw Firefox unexpectedly announce a warning from Norton AV asking me to DL Antivirus 2009, and it didn't look real.

As I sit here, I am getting maybe 2 reports from Spyboot announcing attempted registry changes, which I keep denying, For example:

Combofix doesn't always get it all by itself, and we need to run a script. We'll do that now.

1. Open Notepad

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

Thanks again for your help. Happy New Year!

Before leaving for some New Years fun, I ran the scripted CF (log file below). I think Spybot was still running, however. (Should I re-run CF?)

After returning home, I re-booted and ran a new HiJack log (see below).

Right now the machine seems to run just as before this infection, except McAfee on demand scanning is still being disabled on startup.
It's only been a short while, but I am getting no Spybot warnings or weird IE launches with unwanted webpages.

I'm impressed.

Yes, I think we're getting there.

You need to disable Spybot's Teatimer before we begin, as it will interfere with the fix.

To do this can you start Spybot and go to the Mode button and select Advanced.
Go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer.
Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit".
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
Do not forget to re-enable teatimer when we are done .
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

Run HijackThis.
Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:

Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Hi Mark,

So basically it's not starting when the PC starts up right? I'll have to look into that a bit. Let's continue to make sure you're all clean.

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.

It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
files.
After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
* Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
* Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
* Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:

Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save

Just a couple of things to check on McAfee… I didn't see anything disabled in msconfig from the combofix log, but you can just double check that. Click Start->Run… type msconfig and look at the Startup tab. Make sure nothing from McAfee is disabled. Check them and reboot if so. Also, make sure all McAfee services are running at startup by checking the Services tab.

Hello IndiGenus,

I ran Kaspersky, log file follows, allow with latest HiJack log file.
Machine continues to run well.

McAfee "on access scan" is still getting disabled on startup. I can see it in the startup tab under msconfig. Under McAfee setup, the "enable on access scan at startup" box is checked. The McAfee icon loads in the system tray at startup, but a red circle / slash appears. I have to manually enable on access scanning.

I am considering re-installing McAfee. Any thoughts?

Did you check and make sure all the McAfee services are running? If so, and they are….then yes, I think re-installing McAfee would be the next step.

Most of what Kaspersky found is already quarantined. We need to uninstall combofix.

Time for some housekeeping

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
- ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
- VundoFix backups, if present
- The C:\Deckard folder, if present
- The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

Your version of Java is outdated.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Run and post your HijackThis log. Also let me know how you make out with McAfee.

First, McAfee: There was an option to "repair the installation". I ran that, and McAfee remains enabled when I reboot.
I uninstalled ComboFix.

I ran JavRa to uninstall old Java.
It did not work to install the latest version…. just got blank IE page when using JavaRA.
I browsed to the Java website and did an install from there.

Hi Mark,

Sounds like everything is sorted out now and I believe you are all clean. If all is running well then we can just finish off. You have pretty good protection in place, just make sure to keep it all updated.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Use IE-SPYAD with Zoned Out -
Zoned Out with IE-SPYAD will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the websites.
NOTE: Works with IE only.

Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Well, maybe I have one more issue. I have a windows update notification (yellow shield in the system tray) for the following: Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430) Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install) A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed. Details… I have repeatedly installed this update, and it keeps coming back. I have installed it from the system tray, I have installed it by visiting the windows update site, I have tried installing with McAfee and Spybot on and then off, But there it is again, asking to be installed. Is this an unresolved issue? Thanks! Mark
