edit: I thought my system details would be posted because I listed them when I registered. Sorry. I'm running windows 7.

Every few hours Norton Internet Security notifies me that an intrusion attempt by my computer was blocked. Here are the details per Norton:

Risk name: HTTP Zbot Malicious File Download

attacking computer(mine): joshpitt(192.168.15.2, 63365)

attacker url: aebankonline.com/yulgbvqk/ptxfnhp.php?adv=adv602

destination address: 192.168.15.2, 80

traffic descr: tcp, port 63365

It also has found and claims to have completely removed backdoor.trojan. However, it is telling me this every few hours.

I went to c:\users\j0shpitt\appdata\local\temp where this file was found and saw three .exe's I didn't recognize. Drwatson.exe createdir.exe and securityessentials.exe. I have since blocked them all explicitly with norton, but when I delete them, they seem to pop up again on their own in a few minutes.

It tells me no action is required, but considering that it keeps popping up, I figured I would see if you guys thought different.

Hello, j0shpitt!

:welcome:

My name is Elster and I will be helping you fix your computer.

Please keep in mind that very rarely will a computer be "dis-infected" on the first sweep. The absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean, so please stick with me until I give you the All Clear!

I recommend that you save and print each of my posts, as there will be times when you will not be able to be online to access them.

Step 1:

Malwarebytes

Please open Malwarebytes and run a Quick Scan again. When it has finished scanning, please click "Remove Selected" and post the log in your reply.

Step 2:

OTL

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Custom Scan box, paste in the following:

    netsvcs
    drivers32 /all
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Step 3:

Reply

Things I need to see in your reply:
  • MBAM log
  • OTL log
Thanks!

Elster
I ran mbam fixing all the issues but could not find the log file. I ran it again and this is what it generated:

Hello j0shpitt

Step 1:

OTL

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    PRC - C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (Microsoft Corporation)
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {604BC32A-9680-40D1-9AC6-E06B23A1BA4C} - No CLSID value found.
    O32 - AutoRun File - [2009/09/11 03:36:55 | 000,000,000 | —- | M] () - F:\AUTOEXEC.BAT – [ NTFS ]
    O34 - HKLM BootExecute: (autocheck autochk /r \??\G:) - File not found

    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log

Step 2:

ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

Step 3:

Reply

Things I need to see in your reply:
  • OTL log
  • ComboFix log
Thanks!

Hi j0shpitt

My bad. I forgot you had 64-bit system.

How is your computer running, now?

Please click here to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter
    .

  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • It will by default install it to your desktop folder.Click Next.
  • Hit ok at the prompt for scanning in Safe Mode.
  • It will then open a box There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.

  • System Memory
  • Startup Objects
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)

After that click on Security level then choose Customize then click on the tab that says Heuristic Analyzer then choose Enable Deep rootkit search then choose ok.
Then choose OK again then you are back to the main screen.

  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand Corner.
  • It will automatically Neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it cannot be Neutralized then chooose The delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done click on the reports button at the bottom and save it to file name it Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report it will be at the very top under Detected post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

Thanks!

Elster
I never noticed a decrease in performance on my system, the only indication I had that there was a problem were the notifications from Norton and my own investigation into the temp folder where I found the files that didn't belong and kept showing up. So there have been no symptoms of the infection. I downloaded and ran avp tools in safe mode. It did not detect any malware/virus. I did not find any option to save the report to file, so I lost it when it uninstalled. But when viewing the report it listed no serious or critical events other than the scan starting and stopping. However when I started the scan I noticed that you asked me to make sure the following were checked: # System Memory # Startup Objects # Disk Boot Sectors. # My Computer. # Also any other drives (Removable that you may have) There was no option to include system memory. There has been no indication from Norton of an intrusion attempt since I disinfected with malwarebytes anit-malware. Are there any more scans you would like me to run?
Hello j0shpitt!

Yes, it looks as if MBAM did get rid of most, if not all, of the infections! So, then, I'll just say…

Congratulations!! Your computer is clean again!

I will leave this thread open for a few days to make sure your computer continues to run okay.

Now, just a few more steps here and you'll be out surfing that net in no time!

Open OTL and click the CleanUp button to remove the tools we use.

Clean up System Restore (Vista)

We need to flush out all your old system restore points as they are likely to be infected, and then create a new one so you have a clean configuration to return to should you become infected again. The system restore files are protected by your operating system, so this is how we have to get at them:

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System and Maintenance
  • Select System
  • On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
  • Go back to the System and Maintenance page
  • Select Performance Information and Tools
  • On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
  • Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
  • In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

It is very important that you keep your computer updated with the latest patches and security fixes. Be sure and update the following on a regular basis:

For Windows updates, go here

For Java updates,
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Make Internet Explorer more secure:
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Download some preventative software such as:

Anti Spyware
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. A tutorial can be found here.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. A tutorial can be found here.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. A tutorial can be found here.

Personal Firewalls – UTILIZE ONLY ONE FIREWALL
Anti Virus Programs – NEVER USE MORE THAN ONE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM AT A TIME
Preventive maintenance:

ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

TFC - Cleans temporary files from user accounts. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

MVPS Hosts file - replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

Good luck, and great surfing!!

Elster :)
