Hello,
I'm experiencing pretty bad internet spikes which occur very frequently (sometimes I experience more spikes then no spikes). After googling I came to a forum post about someone who had almost the same problem as me, I tried a couple of solutions which where proposed there, like setting back my pc, doing some stuff in the command prompt, doing a complete virus scan + ad-aware scan. Nothing solved the problem though so I thought I should make my own post.
Some details:
Like 3 months ago my hard disk (of this Dell laptop) crashed and I put a new one inside. I put windows XP on it like it was before (originally it was windows vista, so I have to download the drivers manually since I only have a disk of vista drivers). Since then I had a lot of work to do and I never really tried if my internet worked correctly after the hard disk crash. I'm pretty sure it did at first (however I'm not 100% sure) but anyway, like 3 weeks ago I firstly really tried my internet (with playing wow) and it had huge lag spikes. Also my browser (chrome) gives huge spikes sometimes, and often page not found errors (which are solved by refreshing). Everything which has to do with internet basicly disconnects every some minuts and goes very slow. I tried other browers as well like IE and safari, both with the same spiky results.
I'd like to know what to problem is, I hope it's not my hardware, but what is it then??
btw, I surf with cable (so not wireless).
I hope someone can help me.
I also tried the cable with another laptop. There was no speed issue with that, so the problem is with my laptop and not with the internet I guess..
Any help?
What is the Dell laptop model number and/or service tag number?
Where did you get the XP drivers for it, from the Dell site or elsewhere? My first guess would be that you need a newer or better network driver, but Nahumi may have some other ideas. Post the additional info just in case though.
It's a dell inspiron 9400 which was originally shipped with windows vista. I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site. But since internet didn't work properly with them I also tried downloading netwerk drivers from elsewhere.
I'm not running a torrent client, neither any peer to peer client.
I don't keep wow running either.
At the moment it's not feeling like spikes, but rather like very slow internet, which does sometimes not work at all for like half a minut. One easy solution might be reinstalling the laptop with the shipped vista cd-rom and drivers, but I rather run XP :(. And even then, it could be a hardware problem maybe??..
thx for the responses already btw ! I really hope you guys can find me a solution
Hard to tell from the Dell site which network and wireless you have. Try this, see if it gives us some info to work with.
Start then Run, type msinfo32 and press Enter.
Expand Components then Network. What is shown there? I don't have a laptop any more so I can't look to see exactly what shows for wireless. Provide as much info as you can to help ID the right devices.

That's the one I have yes. I just tested my wireless internet, that is working wonderly well. Cable still very bad… That suggests some problem with the hardware maybe?
A hardware problem is certainly a possibility. You could try a USB to Ethernet device like the TRENDnet - TU-ET100C - 10/100 USB 1.1 Ethernet Adapter shown here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/ca…amp;name=10-100 Ethernet USB
That will give you the performance of Ethernet (100 Mbs) over Wireless (54Mps).
All I can suggest is to download the latest driver again and install it.
How much free space do you have on the hard drive? You could try a parallel install of XP, install the driver and see if the problem happens there as well.
Or … you can start over and do another clean install (with format) of XP, install device drivers and see what happens.
You can also try a Live Linux Cd like Puppy Linux or XUbuntu. No need to install it, just run it from the CD. That way you can check out the hardware. If it works okay then your problem is with Windows XP. If it has the same problem then it's hardware.
If you don't like or want to mess with Linux, give UBCD4WIN (Ultimate Boot CD for Windows) a try. You build a bootable XP CD from your XP install CD then boot it as a Live XP CD, similar to Linux, but it's strictly XP. Takes a little time to make but it's not hard to do.
