Hmm, I hope this works, my last attempt took me to an automated screen saying my hijackthis is too old and I lost everything!

Anyway… I'm not too tech savvy, but have been having real problems updating anything. First noticed the problem when trying to reregister my free avast (I got an error 1006 000003EE) then was unable to update Java- again got an error (this time jre.1.6.0_20-pform17.msi is corrupt). Tried checking microsoft updates, 6 updates required appeared but 5 out of 6 refused to install. Checked the update history and it looks like basically none have installed over the last few months.

My hijackthis log is shown below. Is there anything on my computer that might be stopping me from instaling updates (perhaps to stop me finding these very programs!)?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

Edit: Tried updating malwarebytes, obviously couldn't do it. Tried using the old version and during the scan got an error:

An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team.

Error code: 722 (1813, 93)

The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file.

Which, according to the malwarebytes forums, might suggest something is infected. If so, whatever it is is doing its best to avoid getting found!
Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.
  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Hi CatByte, thanks loads for your reply. I tried to perform the scans you suggested, but when it came to the Gmer scan, I was able to run it, but when I tried to save the results it freezes my computer. I tried a few times and on the most recent occasion ended up with a BSOD! The results that the scan came up with were quite extensive, a lot of stuff in there. The DDS scan results are attached, I don't know if these help at all in addition to the original hijackthis results. (I wasn't sure if you wanted me to post these or attach them, I attached them, at a guess). Thanks again thus far.
Hi try running the GMER scan in safe mode with just the "sections" and "c:\" drive checked. If you still have trouble saving a report scroll down and let me know if there are any files listed as "suspicious modification" and let me know what they are. thanks
I can't seem to start in safe mode. Things went crazy today, the computer got taken over by the AV Security Centre virus, which wouldn't allow me to do anything. I luckily was able to restart the computer and get task manager open in time to end the process before it took over again and have downloaded malwarebytes on a clean computer and am running it now, but it has found nothing so far, when the comp is very obviously infected. I'm guessing I might just have to accept that this computer is ready for the bin. I also seem to have the google redirect virus, but its very tough to fight these when the comp won't let me download or install anything. Thanks for your suggestions thus far anyway.
Please do the following:

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try to run DDS and GMER.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Note: ComboFix will run directly from a USB stick
Ok, upon attempting to use combofix I've gotten a few errors. Firstly, the program started out by saying "not enough memory to complete the sort." Once it tried to download the recovery console I got an error saying "Extracting file failed. It is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted Cabinet file." This is followed by the option to continue scanning for malware (which I'm choosing no as I'm guessing no recovery point has been created) and another error which says "contents of c/:mdcons are not in order. Please disable your security programs before trying again." I have already disabled both threatfire and avast which were running. No other antivirus programs are running. Any thoughts? Edit: Also, when running gmer again, got another bluescreen of death with the following: Problem caused by uxtdapog.sys. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Technical info: ***Stop: 0x00000050 (0xE921c000, 0x00000000, 0xAA72c3E, 0x00000001) uxtdapog,sys- Address AA726c3E base at AA726000, Datestamp 46274f8d Don't know if any of that helps.
