[Resolved] MacAfee Security Scan Plus - Malware?

9 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

This is precautionary in nature, firstly.
However I am just not sure if I have a real problem, or if this is something I can uninstall. Figured I had better ask the experts first.

I am running Windows 7 Home edition in 64-bit mode.

I unexpectedly now have something called "McAfee Security Scan Plus" installed on my system. I believe it occurred when I was on YouTube's website. There *was* a cue to update my Adobe Flash player to continue viewing the content. Apparently this also installed with it. Ever since, my wireless mouse has been experiencing periodic slowdowns as though the battery was dying. Also, sometimes my Facebook Home becomes unreachable and Windows Explorer puts up the cannot display this webpage error as though the website were offline, or as though I had no internet connection. I proved this is not the case, as I could immediately bring up Google, or Environment Canada's weather pages easily. Then later, Facebook becomes available again.

I cannot pin down the exact nature of the pattern of these interruptions.

In the "All Programs" portion of the start bar, there is a folder called "McAfee Security Scan Plus", which contains two entries:
1. - the program itself of the same name as the folder, and
2. - "Uninstall"

I hesitate to click the Uninstall due to the mysterious nature of this problem's appearance.

From the "Are you Infected" thread:
Note: All programs you ask to download have been given "Run as Administrator" priveledges, except DDS.scr for which I could not find that choice.

1. - I already have valid restore points created, however the system restore point tool you recommend is not compatible with Windows 7. My own windows already has this covered, and I do not want to create another restore point now, with this problem on board. I already have some good ones to use.

2. - ERUNT ran fine

3. - DDS did not run:
"This tool does not your support your Operating System
Press any key to continue . . ."
Yes there is a typo in that sentence: the first "your" is obviously incorrect LOL
Apparently this is not compatible with Windows 7 either.

4. - GMER did not run properly (another Windows 7 issue?). When double-clicked to run, it says:
"C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified."
Clicking OK on that error window leaves GMER available to attempt to run.
With all the checkboxes correctly configured per your instructions, clicking "Scan" first produces another error window. This one says:
"C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
Nothing else is running, so what that process might be I do not know.
Clicking OK allows the scan to proceed. When completed the final popup window says:
"GMER hasn't found any system modification."
I then clicked the "Save…" button.

———————————————

There is no "DDS.txt" to copy & paste, nor is there an "Attach, txt" to attach to this post, since DDS did not run.

The following is the GMER.txt file contents, copy & pasted:
Well, as I open this file from my Desktop where I saved it, it is a completely empty file.

———————————————-

Very little information besides my description, I know, but it appears Windows 7 tools is the problem.
Are there any tools you wish me to run for Windows 7? Or am I hooped?
Is it safe to use the "Uninstall" in the McAfee Security Scan Plus folder? (this option kinda scares me really, unless you know that this is a valid commercial program that is simply being piggy back spammed via YouTube?)
What should I do here?

Here's hoping….
Hello again Trilo,

Re: "McAfee Security Scan Plus" installed on my system - That is a legitimate program that you brought onboard when you updated your Adobe Flash Player. It's pretty common these days for software to come bundled with toolbars or utilities like that - watch closely when you are updating as there is usually a checkbox to allow you to opt out of recieving the "extra" program. Go ahead and uninstall it.

GMER is not compatible with 64-bit machines, so there are no worries there. Let's run this scan just to make sure everything else is OK:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:
    netsvcs
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll

    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and paste them into your next post.
Thank you. :)
First thing I did was to uninstall it. Yes, I was very likely lax in noticing what I was doing at the time. And this is my penalty. At least it wasn't too serious … :)
Then I downloaded the OTL program and ran it as instructed.

Trilo,

That log looks good. Let's have you install MBAM and run a scan just to be sure - it's a good program to have anyhow:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • MBAM log
Everything matched up with your instructions until clicking SCAN.
There was no SHOW RESULTS button to click. The log appeared in a Notepad window by itself.
There was nothing to check, and no option at all to REMOVE SELECTED. Perhaps this is because the system was already clean, as you previously expected, anyways. :)

That looks good, Trilo. I'm not sure what is causing your mouse and Facebook to act up, but it's not malware - is that still happening?

Now let's take care of some cleanup:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, it will reboot when it is done and produce a log - You don't need to post it unless you have a problem
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
  • Manually delete any remaining logs or tools.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Your 64-bit Java is out of date. Depending on how you use your computer you may be able to uninstall it. Please read this information and decide if you want to update (links will be on that page) it or just remove it via Add/Remove Programs.

I'd hang on to Malwarebytes if I were you; update it and run a quick scan once a week. The File Hippo Updatechecker or Secunia Personal Software Inspector would be good to have also. Run whichever one you choose a couple times a month.

Please post back once more so I know you are all set.
Ahh yes. Guess I neglected to mention. I haven't noticed any mouse interference issues, ever since I uninstalled the McAfeeSecurity Scan Plus program. It was probably experiencing those issues when that program was being a resource hog I presume. I have run everything, and the logs were removed from my desktop by the OTL tool, except for the empty GMER log, and the MBAM log. I have just deleted those manually. Everything appears to running smoothly and normally again, now. Thank you. So I should delete: - the SysRestorePoint - GMER installation download, which is actually called "bj5r86e2" - and the MBAM Setup Is this correct? These are still on my desktop at the moment. The Java page would not load (Just sat there trying without failing…). I will try again later.
You're welcome, Trilo. I suspect that you are correct about that McAfee program. Go ahead and delete those remaining items from your desktop. The gist of the Java link was that if you use the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer you need, and should update, your 64 bit Java application. If you are using the 32 bit version of IE (which is the default set up) you really only need the 32 bit Java application and can remove the 64 bit via Control Panel > Programs.
I actually use both versions of IE. I do not recall how I got to have both versions, however I did notice that I was unable to view things like YouTube videos (among other things) in the 64-bit version, and so simply reverted to the 32-bit version for things like that. I guess that means that if I upgrade to the 64-bit version of Java, that I won't need to use the 32-bit version? I had not thought about it that much since I simply switched between the two for certain situations, such as for Facebook apps which use Flash player.
Ahh and the Java web page is displaying now … I shall read and heed. Plus any advic e you might want to shed on that as well is all good information too! Thank you again, very much! You guys rock! :D
A short amount of research reveals that the missinf plugin I would need for YouTube and Facebook apps, is Flash PLayer, which is not currently supported for 64-bit IE. Guess I will maintain my status quo of both version of IE until that changes.
Sounds like you are all set. Unless you have something else I'll go ahead and close the thread. Thanks for your patience; take care.
