I've had this problem for a while now. It started with the "google redirect". At the time all I had was Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Norton. I ran them all and none got rid of it. For a while I had been unhappy with Norton, and Spybot made my computer slow, so I uninstalled them. I installed Ad-Aware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Cloud Panda… ran them all and they all found stuff which I erased, but it still didn't get rid of the problem. I found something called UnHackMe, ran it and also found a bunch of stuff, (including srd64.exe), but it made my pc screwey so I uninstalled it along with Cloud Panda. The PC is working fine now, no "major" flaws, but still have the redirect, and another one that says Im the 1000th visitor and won a prize.

So now I'm trying to follow the steps from this page, but GMER keeps getting stuck. the initial scan works fine, but when I actually hit scan that's when it gets stuck. I got the log from the initial scan, but like I said, when I hit scan, it gets stuck on something called
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys
Please, any help is really appreciated, here are the logs I managed to get.

Hello Kilmez and :welcome:

My name is JonTom.

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

  • Please be aware that I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
  • This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
  • I will reply back shortly with instructions.
Hello Kilmez

  • TDSS Killer

    • Please download TDSS Killer by clicking here and save the file (called tdsskiller.zip) to your desktop.
    • Extract the executable file from the zipped folder and run it.
    • Once TDSS Killer has finished, it will create a log in your C:\ drive called TDSSKiller_* (where "*" denotes version and date).
    • Please copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here or here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

Please post the TDSSKiller log and the DDS logs in your next reply.

Also, please tell me how your computer is behaving now.

Hello Kilmez

The computer is working well right now.

Thats good to hear, but we may still have a lot of work to do. Please work your way through the following steps:

  • P2P Programs:

    • P2P programs are a major source of Malware infections.
    • From your log I see you have Ares 2.1.5 and LimeWire PRO 4.12.3. We do not pass judgment on file-sharing, however we must inform you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your system will always make you more susceptible to Malware infections.
    • The use of P2P programs may be contributing to your current situation, and you would certainly be doing yourself a favour by removing them.
    • If you wish to keep the program(s), please do not use them until your computer is cleaned.
    • Information regarding the risk of using these programs can be found from here and here.
    • It is strongly recommend that you uninstall any P2P programs you have on your system.
    • To do this, Click on "Start" then on "Control Panel" and then on "Add or remove programs".
    • A list of currently installed programs will be displayed.
    • Find the Ares 2.1.5 and LimeWire PRO 4.12.3 programs, click on them once and then click on the "Remove" button.
    • If you are prompted to re-boot your computer to complete the uninstall please do so.

      PLEASE NOTE:
    • Even if you are using a P2P program that is deemed safe, it is only the program that is safe. Any files that you receive using a "safe" P2P program may be infected with Malware. Malware writers use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread infected files.

  • Download Combofix and RE-NAME it BEFORE saving

    • Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to Kilmez.exe before saving it.
    • Save it to your desktop. Change the "save as file type" to "all files".
    • Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop.

    • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    Link 1
    Link 2

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.

    • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.
Hi again… here is the Combo Fix log…

Hello Kilmez

Thank you for the log.

I can see that you use Avira AntiVir as your resident Anti-virus, but I can also see evidence of Symantec (Norton) products in your log. Do you still use Norton products? If you do not, and if you would like to remove these products from your system please let me know and I will provide a removal tool once you machine is clean.

Do you still use the NETGEAR WG111T bootloader? Please let me know.

  • P2P Programs:

    • I can see you have "eMule" installed (I missed this from your previous post :( ).
    • To remove eMule, Please follow the same removal instructions you used for Ares and LimeWire (post #5).

  • Please work through the following steps

    • Open Notepad (Click on "Start", then on "Run" and type "notepad" (without quotations) in the Open field, then click on "OK").
    • NOTE: Do not Use Wordpad or any other text editor except Notepad or the script will fail.
    • Copy and Paste the text in the codebox below into the open Notepad window:

      http://forums.whatthetech.com/Definitely_infected_please_help_t110864.html&view=findpost&p=640782#entry640782

      Collect::
      c:\windows\TEMP\lzctreqbj.sys

      Driver::
      ineti

      DDS::
      Trusted Zone: 0.0.0.0
      Trusted Zone: motive.com\patttbc.att
    • Save this as "CFScript.txt" (including the quotation marks), change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

      [external image: Posted Image]
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
    • Once the log is produced, re-engage your resident anti virus.
    • Note: When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box - do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
    • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

  • MBAM:

    • I can see you have MBAM installed.
    • Double click on the MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
    • A screen will appear. It will look like this:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    • Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
    • The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
    • Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform full scan"and then click on "Scan".
    • Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

    • If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.
    • Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart your computer, please do so immediately.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.

  • Please perform the following scan:

    • This is a very deep scan that can take many hours. In some instances you may need to let it run overnight. Please be patient.
    • It is recommended that you disable your onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans to eliminate software conflicts and to speed up scan time.
    • DO NOT surf the net while your resident protection is disabled!
    • Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware applications you use.

Please perform a Kaspersky Online Scan of your computer by clicking here.
An alternative link to the Kaspersky Online Scan Tool can be found here.

You will be taken to a web page. It will look like this:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
    • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run (at times it may appear to stall).
    • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

    • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report. To obtain the report:
    • Click on: Save Report As
    • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
    • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:Text file [*.txt]
    • Then, click: Save
    • Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
    • If you need help performing the above steps, an animated tutorial can be found here.

In your next reply, please provide the ComboFix log, the MBAM log and the Kaspersky Online Scan log.
Finally, the Kaspersky scan took 8 hours. :pullhair: As for the P2P programs I have Im gonna keep em a while… I know I shouldn't, in fact last time I got help the same recommendation was made. Evetually I'll ge rid of them… but not just yet…
Also, I still use the Netgear bootloader, and yes… once the pc is clean could you send me the tool to get rid of any Symantec remainders???

Well, here are the logs:

Seriously… thank you so much for your help.
Hello Kilmez

Thank you for the logs.

As for the P2P programs I have Im gonna keep em a while… I know I shouldn't, in fact last time I got help the same recommendation was made.

You were given good advice then and now.

Chances are you became infected through files acquired when using your P2P programs. This time it was a TDL3 rootkit infection (nasty). The next time it might be Virut, in which case you would have to perform a full system reformat if you wanted your computer back.

We can only advise you to remove these programs. However, you are responsible for making that decision, and therefore (by extension) for any future damage that may be caused to your machine by not removing them.

The one remaining infected file is located in your Java Cache. We will take care of this now:

  • Please Clear Your Sun Java Cache

    • Click on "Start", then on "Control Panel" and then on the Java icon (looks like a coffee cup). If you do not see the icon, look to your left and click "Switch to Classic View".
    • On the "General" tab, under "Temporary Internet Files", click the "Settings" button.
    • Next, click on the "Delete Files" button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - ("Applications and Applets" and "Trace and Log Files").
    • Leave BOTH Checked
    • Click "OK" on Delete Temporary Files Window.
    • Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the Cache.
    • Click "OK" to leave the Temporary Files Window.
    • Click "OK" to leave the Java Control Panel.

once the pc is clean could you send me the tool to get rid of any Symantec remainders???

  • Please download and run the Norton Removal Tool

    • The Norton removal tool will locate and remove all traces of Norton products from your computer.
    • To download the tool, click here.
    • Read throught the information on the page, and then select the Norton product that you have (this is the one that will be removed).
    • Follow the instructions to obtain the removal tool and to complete the removal process.

  • Please remove the following tools

    • You no longer need GMER, DDS or TDSSKiller.
    • Please delete these tools from your system.

  • Please Uninstall Combofix

    • Click on "Start" and then on "Run".
    • Now type combofix /uninstall in the run box and click "OK". Please note the space between the "x" and the "/Uninstall", it needs to be there.

  • Your Internet Explorer is out of date

    • A newer version of Internet Explorer is available from here.
    • Alternatively, you can use Firefox (I will provide the link later).

  • Your Adobe is out of date

    • You can obtain the latest version of Adobe Reader from here, and the latest version of Flash Player from here.
    • For more information and links to Adobe updates and downloads click here.

Once you have completed the above steps you should be good to go! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Finally, please take the time to read through the information provided below:

    Enhance your System Security

    • For an excellent list of free anti virus software, free online virus scanners, free spyware detection/removal and free firewalls, click here.

    • IMPORTANT! Do not run more than ONE firewall and ONE real-time antivirus on your system at any one time. When using "on demand" scanners, first update the detection signature files, then disconnect from the internet and disable your resident security program before running the scan.
    • Once complete, remember to re-engage your resident security before going online.

    Web Browsers and Browser Security

    Firefox
    • Firefox is generally considered to have greater browsing security in comparison to other popular programs. You can download Firefox 3.0 from here.

    No-Script
    • If you use Firefox as your default browser, No-Script can provide additional security by preventing malicious scripts from being executed on your system.
    • You can download No-Script by clicking here.

    Internet Explorer
    • The newest version of Internet Explorer is available from here.

    SpywareBlaster
    • If you use Internet Explorer as your default browser, SpywareBlaster would be a valuable addition to your online security.
    • SpywareBlaster prevents malicious ActiveX objects from being downloaded onto your system.
    • You can download SpywareBlaster by clicking here.

    Web of Trust
    • When using search engines, Web of Trust provides you with an easy way of telling the good sites from the bad and is compatible with both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
    • Coloured symbols are displayed next to search results, giving you more confidence in the links you choose to click on: Green (To go), Yellow (Caution) and Red (Stop).
    • You can download Web of Trust by clicking here.

    Keep your Software Updated
    • Outdated software can sometimes have vulnerabilities that are exploitable by malware.
    • Check if there are available updates for your installed software with Secunia's Online Software Inspector by clicking here.

    Passwords
    • Learn how to create strong passwords by clicking here and test the strength of the passwords you already use by clicking here.

Thanks for your help JonTom! :notworthy: Did all the last steps you told me to. I know I should get rid of the P2P's, but hopefully I'll be getting a new PC soon, this one is really old… once I have the new one I won't be using any of those programs no more. Once again… thanks!
