[Resolved] MBAM detected & removed Trojans NIS 2010 missed; still
27 min read
Wasn't able to end GMER normally. Took quite a while after clicking the X before it even disappeared. But even then the CPU load remained at 100% and it still had a place holder in the task bar. System did not respond to anything anymore, so I power-cycled it a few minutes ago and am still waiting for the boot to finish.GMER should not take that long, end it and run RSIT
Should the computer remain unplugged from the network while running RSIT?
Thanks, Ken. RSIT already finished. I am now trying to run GMER again, this time with all of the external drives detached. It already made it well past the spot where it hung before and by now is analyzing the Registry. You can run RSIT either way
Hopefully it'll be able to complete its analysis this time, so that we'll have additional information at our hands.
At present it is going through numerous entries of the form
SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{some-cryptic-string}\TypeLib
Hopefully GMER will be finished by tomorrow morning and will have a report for us.By now it has already been running for 11 hours…
Right now it's looking at
SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{some_cryptic_string}\1.0\HEL
Which of the buttons should I click so that we at least would get a report of what it may have found so far? Also, is GMER sensitive to clicking around on/in its window and/or resizing the GMER windows and/or starting let's say MS Paint or MS word in order to capture screen shots?
If that wouldn't be a problem for GMER, I'd rather play it safe and take a screen shot of the information displayed in the GMER window so that we'd still have it available (at least as a gfx image) even if GMER hangs up again (becomes non-responsive) once I click on STOP or SAVE. But then again, this behavior in previous runs of GMER might have been due to the fact that it was stuck all night at the point where it attempted to access one of the external hard disks, none of which are attached right now.
To Enter Safemode
- Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
- As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu. - Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
- Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
- Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
- Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
- If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
[external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
- In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
- Sections
- IAT/EAT
- Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
- Show All (don't miss this one)
- Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
- Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
- Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Here are the contents of both RSIT log files:
- Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
- Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
- Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
- Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (

You can Google these and make up your own mind if you want to keep them, they appear to fall somewhere in the gray areal

Are you retrying GMER ?
Maybe the images willl provide some useful information.

My understanding is that the article is in reference to a "utility" of the same name provided by survey company OpiStat, whereas this is NetMeter is a utility developed by Oliver Winterholler: http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/Read this, I would advise to uninstall it

I've used both of them on and off, but given how rarely I use them, I probably ought to simply get rid of them. After all, the YouSendIt website is just a click away, anyway. You can Google these and make up your own mind if you want to keep them, they appear to fall somewhere in the gray areal

I'm doing that now. Had to finish some work first. My apologies for the delay. Are you retrying GMER ?
EDIT (02/01/2010, 5:10 pm EST): Where the SOFTWARE entries in the Gmer status line crawled by before at a pace of a handful per minute, by now they are racing by at a rate of hundreds per minute, short of an occasional entry that receives a whole second or two of attention.
EDIT (02/01/2010, 8:25 pm EST): GMER is still running in safe mode. It is well past the Registry entries and by now is processing the contents of C:\Program Files\ in alphabetical order of the sub-directory names. Right now it is working on the folders starting with T.
EDIT (02/01/2010, 9:15 pm EST): Oh well, GMER just started scanning C:\Documents and Settings, so it is likely going to take a few more hours to finish.
C:\Documents and Settings\Roland\My Documents is not accessible

One of the dictionaries I rely on unfortunately mandates StarForce copy protection, which might be the culprit behind the slow boots, based on comments left primarily by gamers at various forums. Apparently StarForce is quite prevelant in computer games. ProHlp02 is part of StarForce, too.
BTW, could the rootkit components we discovered and eliminated in the last few days be leftovers from a SmitFraud infection quite a while back that bleepingcomputer back then helped to handle with SmitFraudFix?
That rootkit does not have anything to do with Smitfraud. Its a shame all the work you put into GMER and thats all we got. .
I am not looking at anything bad, that copy protection, if you remove it you won't be able to play the CDs I believe.
