While trying to determine in the Windows forum what might be the cause behind some relatively long times during system boot to get from the BIOS screen to the login prompt, I was advised to also check with the malware experts in this forum to see if anything was left behind by said Trojans or if there is anything else going one that might be eluding both MBAM and NIS2010.

Additional information is also available in another thread which determined that my laptop's keyboard needed to be replaced.

The computer in question is an Acer TravelMate 4202WLMi with 3 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, Win XP Home. Detailed information about my laptop (generated by PC Pitstop) is available here.

The "SONAR" of NIS 2010 detects and quarantines/removes several times a day files named "~crfxxxx.tmp", where "xxxx" is a hex sequence; the severity of these files is deemed "High", based on "Suspicious behavior", Users is "Unknown", Origin "Not Available"

Over the course of the last few months, NIS 2010 detected
  • W32.Blackmal.E@mm!enc
  • W32.Rontokbro@mm
  • several "Trojan Horses"
  • Infostealer.Gampass
  • W32.IRCbot
  • Suspicious.MH690.A
  • Backdoor.NetBus.svr
  • W32.IRCBot
  • Trojan.FakeAV
  • A "Heuristic Virus" in a compressed file
  • Downloader
  • Trojan.Horst (no, that's not a typo)
All of the above were identified and quarantined by NIS 2010

And, before I forget it, more than a year ago, I had an encounter with a Rogue AntiSpyware which I ultimately was able to eradicate (or so I was led to believe) with the help of smitfraudfix obtained from bleepingcomputer.com .

Also, when I tried to run GMER last night (01/26/2010) to add its log to this post, it crashed less than a minute after hitting Scan with NIS active.
When I tried to run it with the AntiVirus and Firewall of NIS turned off it virtually immediately caused a blue screen of death after hitting Scan.

The only useful information on the BSOD was

0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x0000005A, 0xA69F7AE4, 0x00000000)

Upon restart and authorizing to send the error report to Microsoft, the following URL was opened by the operating system:
http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/Respons…82-fdf3197754b3

Let me know what other information I can provide that might help in narrowing things down.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Thank you for your response and guidance.

I was able to perform this step.

Please download RootRepeal from one of these locations and save it to your desktop
[*]Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.

Unfortunately RootRepal has been hanging for almost 3 hours now, only stating

Initializing, please wait….

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.

Given that RootRepeal didn't run, I wasn't sure whether or not to continue with this step, so I did not execute DDS, yet.

See attached.

What I found a bit surprising was to still see various entries referring to F-Prot AntiVirus, even though I removed the application months ago right before installing NIS2010.
Similarly, there are still references to SpyBot Search & Destroy in these logs although I removed it at the same time.

============= FINISH: 21:53:29.09 ===============
Good Morning,

Just copy and paste any reports into this thread , its easier for me to see an analyze.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Just copy and paste any reports into this thread , its easier for me to see an analyze.

Will do, Ken; wasn't sure what would be easier for you. Now I know ;)

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Below are the ComboFix.txt and HijackThis.log.

I did a couple of reboots to see if things had improved, but noticed that the time from the end of the SOS output until the login prompt still is in excess of 6 minutes. Also, NIS2010 does not start all the way each time, it seems. While I can see some of its processes in Process Explorer, it does not present the UI and/or the corresponding icon in the task tray.

PS: I had to reinstall the PerSono software for my USB headset to get it to work again after ComboFix ran, but that's no biggy.

PPS: ComboFix apparently wreaked havoc on the configuration settings and licensing/registration of The Bat! :(
Hi,

Let me tell ya, you have an awful lot of programs starting up, this is most likely why it takes so much time to load. You still may have some malware issues, lets fix those first and once your clean I will link you to our windows forum and they can help you sort them out.

Before we proceed I need to know if these files are bad, I am sure they are but want to make sure before we remove them

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Go to VirusTotal and submit these files for analysis, just use the BROWSE feature and then Send File , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

c:\windows\system32\t3zroland.sys

I also stumbled across a

c:\windows\system32\t3yroland.sys

which I submitted for analysis as well.

When VirusTotal didn't detect any infection and also stated that both of the .sys files were generic INI files, I viewed them with the view function of TotalCommander.

Here are the contents of t3yroland.sys:

If C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\PsSdk30.drv is still on the system, it is hiding from view, even though the system is configured to show all files and folders including both hidden and system files. Is there any other method to reveal this file? Should I try to boot into Safe Mode with network enabled, so that I could submit the file to VirusTotal? Or should I boot into Safe Mode and attempt to copy said .drv file onto a USB stick to then upload it once the system has been rebooted?

Please advise.

With respect to the boot times, I was under the impression that the majority of apps configured to start automatically do so after I login, rather than before I login. That's why I am much more worried about the long time that passes before I get to see the login screen. The time the system spends after logging in to start all those apps doesn't bother me all that much; after all, there's a logical explanation for it, namely all the apps configured to start at that point.

But let's first get rid of whatever malware and/or malware remnants might still be on the system. Once that has been taken care of, maybe somebody with a keen eye for ProcessMonitor output will be able to shed some more light on what's going on during that period, should said long delay still persist. Based on the lack of disk activity once the SOS portion has been displayed until shortly before the system blanks the screen, displays a mouse cursor and subsequently the login screen, I am wondering if the system is merely waiting for some device or program, but never receives the expected response so that it ultimately runs into and/or triggers a timeout upon which the boot process continues. But without a close look at and better understanding of the ProcessMonitor output, that's right now just pure speculation.
c:\windows\system32\166.tmp <–What about this one

A lot of the programs you have running at start up may also be running as a windows service and those take a bit of time to load, but this is a windows issue, you can fix that later

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

My apologies, for having neglected to mention that this one, just like the .drv file, does not show up either, despite the system being configured to also list hidden and system files and folders.

Please post this log in your next reply.

Looks like those files are ok. Sometimes when running different scans to remove this garbage , the scans do sometimes alter a setting. Glad you go the headset issue resolved. How are things running now ?

How are things running now ?

Ken, thanks for all your help.

While I haven't started all apps, yet, that are installed on this computer, I have tried the once I most often use and except for the two apps already mentioned, I haven't encountered problems with any of the others.

The boot process is still slow, but now we can be relatively sure that it is not because of malware, if I understand you correctly.

OTOH, when I googled for the PsSdk30.drv reference found by HijackThis that you pointed out to me, it seems that it was/is part of a rootkit.
So, could it be that this particular rootkit is trying to stealth its components? And, if so, how would we go about getting past its defenses?

Call me paranoid …
Hi,

This was part of a rootkit and CF removed it

I am still not convinced that those files are ok, but lets dig deeper.

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan…click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
I am typing this from another computer right now. When I first started GMER, it was just sitting there without any apparent activity going on and with the button "Stop", "Copy" and "Save" grayed out. The only thing displayed within the GMER windows were a handful of lines at the very top. I then closed the GMER window and restarted GMER. This time around, the same few lines appeared at the very top within the GMER window, but this time it did not gray out the aforementioned three buttons. I then clicked on "Start", which was several hours ago. By now, GMER has already listed about two pages of entries within its window. Since task manager is still running in the task tray, it shows 100% CPU usage. I guess I'll have to let GMER run through the night and take a look at its results in the morning.
