Well I did those changes and the folders are not there! It was wierd that I got the Access Denied message on those folders. I thought it might have been from the locked registry key that GMER identified, but It seems like all is well. What next? It seem to be running fine.

Good job

  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
When I ran Combofix /uninstall I got the error message that Norton Internet Security is active and to disable these scanners before clicking OK as this could cause great harm to the computer. So I wasn't able to proceed. I tried to uninstall Norton and I think the one combofix routine you gave me was to remove it but it appears that it is still there. What now?
I ran HJT to see if Norton was being ran from there and I found the following entries that I had HJT remove:

O3 - Toolbar: Show Norton Toolbar - {90222687-F593-4738-B738-FBEE9C7B26DF} - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\coShared\Browser\1.0\UIBHO.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)

I closed out of the Combofix program but it uninstalled anyway. I think the deleted entries were the cause, but just in case I have included my HJT log:

I followed your instructions and after each command, when I hit enter, a command prompt window popped up but not long enough to read what it said. Then I ran HJT and followed your instructions. I then rebooted andran HJT again and the two Norton entries were still there. I followed you instructions again and ran HJT again right after and the entries were still there. I guess Norton is one tough cookie….any suggestions? Also, when the computer starts up, it looks like a small IE window pops up, but without a tool bar or address bar and a message that there is a problem with the internet connection. I think this is from som ATT internet software that is running at start up prior to establishing a connection. I can't find a way to stop this program from starting up. Any suggestions? I thank you so much for sharing your vast knowlege with me.

Are you using AT&T as your internet provider? Are you Right Clicking on HijackThis and selecting Run As Administrator?
Yes I am running HJT as administrator. I am not sure if my friend is using ATT as her internet provider but I think she is. Currently the computer is hooked up through a wireles internet provider. There is an ATT program that runs at start up that I want to get rid of, but I didn't want to do it until we were done.
The only thing I see left to do is make sure all of Symantec is gone.
Do you see this folder? c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
If so, delete everything in it and then delete the folder.
There isn't that folder and a search for Symantec turns up nothing. It is wierd that I remove the entry for the two files and it comes back
