A friend gave me her computer to clean up and here is what I have. She had failed to do any updates to Vista (service pack 1, 2 etc.) she also contracted a few bugs along her way, Vundo and also some fake spyware programs. She knows nothing about computers and tried to fix it herself and then called me. Here is what I have so far. I downloaded ERUNT and ran it, it ran but then there was an error "Unable to create file" and then when you try to continue, you get another error that says, "Error saving file, RegCreatKeyEx:5-Access is denied". I ran MBAM and it discovered several infected files and attempted to clean them. Here is the Log. On rebooting the computer I get an error about unable to rub kikepomo.dll I am sure this is because of an autorun entry that we need to fix down the road. I tried to run the GMER rootkit scanner but when it ran it froze up or a message pooped up stating that the program stopped working. Then I ran the DDS file but before I ran it, I attempted to disable the Windows Defender according to the instructions. When I went to Start > Programs > Windows Defender •Click on Tools & Settings > Options. •Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box. There was no option box to check or unchec for Real-time protection. And when I went to the control panel and was told to remove the Administrator options, there was not that option. DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Here is what I did. I couldn't find a My Computer. I put an Icon on the desktop but when I right clicked Properties, I couldn't get to the show hidden files, etc. I endeed up doing this through the Control Panel. I downloaded ATF Cleaner and ran it. I downloaded Combofix to the desck top and looked for security software in the tray and there wasn't anything running. I went to the Control Panel and Add/Remove programs. Norton was listed but when I tried to uninstall it, I got a message thet it couldn't find the module. I ran combofix and it gave me a message that Norton was running ant it continued to run. Here is the log.

I am at work and will look when I get home. I think they are part of the vundo virus. The reason I believe this, is because during one of the Microsoft updates, Windows Defender identified kikepomo.dll as an infected file and identified it as vundo.me and supposedly fixed the problem. I am pretty sure this was an oversite on your part, but c:\program files\ERUNT and c:\program files\ATT-RC are the programs I installed per instructions. I will get back and give you more information when I get home.
The majority of the files have a dll file named the same as the folder, ie. Folder baliteta contains a file called baliteta.dll A couple of the folders are empty and a couple of the folders contain a file with the same name as the folder with the extension of .dll.tmp. I am not using this computer for anything except to try and get it clean. When I turned on the computer today, IE would not run. When I double click, it does not open. I tried to right-click and run and also from the program menu I tried running it, it would not run. The computer had Safari so I was able to go online with that browser. Ok, where do we go from here?
OK thanks, I am not sure if this is relevant, but I was looking through the file browser and there are several folder that have what looks like a shortcut type icon and when I try to access it, it says that it is inaccessible and access is denied. Some are common folders like Documents and Settings. :wall:
Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
When I ran Combofix, I got a message that a virus scanner needed to be disabled (Norton Internet Security) before you click the OK button or there might be problems. As I stated before, I don't have an icon in the system tray to click on. In the start menu, I see Norton Internet Security and when I click on it, nothing happens. I also tried to uninstall the program but that didn't work. I closed the window via the X. Then a new window came up and said that it would scan anyway. IE will open now but I am still unable to access the weird folders. Here are the logs….. Thanks for your assistance!

We're going to go at this in stages.
I want to remove all of Nortons / Symantec but before we do that we want to have an anti-virus program running.

Step 1.
We'll do a HJT fix.

Step 2.
Install a free Anti-virus.

Step 3.
I will give you another Combofix fix, after you have the anti-virus program running.

1. All tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
With Admin Rights (Right click on HijackTHis each time you use it, choose "Run as Administrator")

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - rsion - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - ` P

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ReminderApp] C:\Program Files\Nova Development\Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 4.0\ReminderApp.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Get a free one.

Only run one AVG at a time.

Use an AntiVirus Software - Choose only one - More than one will conflict. It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running to protect against viruses. Update Antivirus prior to manual scans as necessary or as used. Please only choose one, having more than one can cause problems, such as crashes and your computer to slow down.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Folder::
c:\program files\Symantec
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security

Driver::

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well after a quite lengthy battle to install the AVG I finally got it to install. I kept getting the message that it could not install because Norton Internet Security was active and then took me to the Delete programs and I could not delete Norton. I went back on to teel you about this and I see the you posted how to remove Norton through ComboFix. I did as instructed and then tried to install AVG and it still came up with the message that Norton Security was running and I figured that maybe after the ComboFix, I could nor uninstall Norton. It took me to the control panel but Norton was nowhere to be found as a program :scratch: So I went back and installed AVG (for about the 10th time) and this time I said to skip the uninstall of Norton (against ComboFix's advice) and I was able to install and run AVG. I did a complete scan and it found one issue, Toolband.toolband.obj. I told it to remove the object, and it couldn't then it asked if I wanted to try again and I said yes, and it seemed to quarantine it. The computere seems to be running better but there is still the issue of the "locked" items in the explorer.
