I have a problem with my Firefox browser. When I tried downloading a codec to update my windows media player, unfortunately it affected my computer with malware and spyware. Thankfully Norton stopped viral attempts, but I still have problems with ads. What happens is whenever I go to certain websites, instead of loading up the wanted site, I either get an ad in its place, or I go to the website I want, but another tab opens up with an ad. Another problem I have noticed is that it happens occasionally when I use the Firefox Google browser. Same situation as mentioned, but even more accurate there with ad spam. However, when using the original google browser, nothing happens, which is good. Whenever that happens, I get a lot of ads such as lucky casino, lucky results, and ticket purchasing to name a few. I tried several anti-malware and spyware programs, the Malawarebytes and SuperAntispyware was able to help clear a lot of infected files, but doesn't find as much now. And when I try other programs such as Adware, it scanned for 5 hours and nothing. Even when using the internet while its scanning I still get the ads on my browser. What can I do about this?
Hi there,

OK, let's take a look at your system. I need find out what is on there before we being cleaning, so please run the following two tools/scans.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop.
  • Open [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] tab.
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the [external image: Posted Image] button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Please post this log in your next reply.

==EOF==

I did it exactly as you said, but after 2 seconds, it finished saying that it couldn't find anything in the system registry in the rootrepeal. I did everything as you laid out, but I couldn't select the C drive option, after I selected the 4 to scan, it just automatically scanned. So what now?

Attachments:

You mentioned that you have Norton AntiVirus, but I can also see traces of both Avast and AVG. Are these two programs that you have previously used, and have now uninstalled?

Please download ComboFix to your desktop from one of these locations. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making IE the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

It took a while but hopefully we can find something from this. And yeah, I used to use AVG years ago, then i got rid of it because I needed a stronger viral protection program, however some files were hard to get rid of but I managed to do so. I hope this won't be too serious.
How about Avast? Have you finished using that as well?

Click Start >> Run, then copy paste this command into the Run box and hit Enter:
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /v houwo /f

Do the same with this one:
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /v iakyl /f

You machine is looking a lot better, but I would like a second opinion, so please run the following scan. These online AntiVirus scans can often identify files that your resident scanners miss.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Let me know how the machine is running now, and what problems remain.

Couldn't complete the scan, I had to restart my computer for protection cause it was taking such a long time to complete it. Though, it got over 50% and hasn't found anything ever since the clean up with the last program. So I think I should be ok, plus ever since the clean up by the last program, I haven't had any ads come up whenever I used the mozilla google search. That did just the trick. Plus it cleaned up a lot of space on my computer by 10% and my internet is working better. What a difference. Thanks so much for the help.
OK, just one step to uninstall ComboFix.

Click Start >> Run, and then type ComboFix /u and hit enter.
You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.

Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to consider to prevent any future infections.
  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
