My wife/daughter's laptop is infected with at least 2 viruses. It is a Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop with Windows XP operating system, AVG Anti-Virus Free, and primarily using Firefox as their browser. My daughter accidentally clicked on an ad on Neopets, and suddenly pop-up ads started popping up everywhere. Now, even when trying to cruise through this site, pop-ups accur, and then these boxes pop up:

IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error: The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occured in the application at location 0x7c812arb.
* after clicking "OK" on this error tab an ERROR box opens and says "Runtime Error 217 at 02D9FD2D

I did a full system scan and the rebooted the computer, when it restarted it said "Resident Shield Alert: Multiple Threat Detection"

File Infection Result
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\drivers\aec.sys Virus identified Worm/Generic.AQVG Infected
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\asyncmac.sys Virus identified Worm/Generic.AQVG Object is white-listed (critical/system file that should not be removed)

I tried removing the infections and it could not perform the task.

Please tell me how to proceed with removing these infections. I imagine from looking at a lot of posts I need to download DDS, run it, and post the results to this log, but I wanted to get this info up a.s.a.p. cause I know it might take a bit to get a response. I will post the results of the DDS scans as soon as they're done.

Here is the result of the DDS scans:

My name is SweetTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • Logs from malware removal programs (DDS is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. It's important to note that these instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within five days
. I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then,
unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.
Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your log, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Before we continue I need to get some clarification on something. Your log shows traces of multiple security programs. Your logs show that you currently have or have had at one point the following security programs installed:
  • AVG 8
  • McAfee
  • CA Personal Firewall
  • AT&T Internet Security Wizard

Could you comment on the above stating which one of these you use? I believe that the McAfee comes bundled with AT&T Internet Security Wizard but I'm not absolutely sure.

Anyway with that said lets continue.

We need to remove a program. To do this please do the following:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):
  • My Web Search (My Fun Cards)
Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:
1. Comment on the Security Software question that I asked you.
2. The log that was produced after running ComboFix.
3. An update on how the computer is running.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.

YES...I still need your assistance... when I restarted the computer after hearing back from you, AVG Anti-virus showed a huge list of infections, and pop-ups showed up like crazy saying "Internet Security 2010" has detected security threats, new database available etc.. with at least two new "Anti-virus" products wanting me to download updates etc that I know are part of the infection.

I didn't feel secure getting back on the internet on that computer to complete this process, so I now have my work computer with me to make these posts & continue the process. Can I download the programs I need to run on the infected computer on my clean computer, put on a jump drive & then put on the infected computer to run? Do I need to make a new log since it seems some of the viruses have now put software on my infected computer?

In answer to your earlier question, AVG is the only active Anti-virus program I'm using on the computer.

THANKS!

If things are too hectic on the infected computer then you may want to download the tools on the clean computer and the transfer the tools over to the infected computer, then move the logs that the tools produce onto your flash drive.

If you choose to go down this avenue then please run a tool called Flash Disinfector on your Flash Drive. Instructions for how to run this tool are provided below.

You will need to download this program on the clean computer and then run this program on your flash drive.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Running OTS
To ensure that I get all the information this log will need to be attached (instructions at the end) if it is to large to attach then upload to Mediafire and post the sharing link.

Download OTS to your Desktop
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All Users
  • Under Additional Scans click the "Extras" button
  • In the custom scans section copy and paste in the following

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:
1. The log that was produced after running OTS.

It would be helpful if you could answer each question in the order asked, as well as numbering your answers.
