Hello, My computer acts like it's bogged down. For example, right clicking on something takes forever for the menu to pop up. Also explorer is freezing and locking up on me. It gets to the point that ctrl+alt+del doesn't do anything. I've run Malwarebytes and Spybot with no infections found. I've run check disk, defragged, eliminated as many programs from startup that I can find, and I've run through all the suggestions in the two "computer running slow" threads with no luck. I have 35 GB free on a 150GB drive and there's 1 GB RAM. I do have a ton of folders and icons on my desktop, but everything I've found online says that shouldn't matter, and I've always had a bunch with no problem. Can you see if there's anything hidden that I'm overlooking? Should I try doing a system restore? (When following the instructions for disabling tea timer, I unchecked the box under tools->resident, but couldn't find a tea timer entry under startup) Thanks in advance, -Dan ROOTREPEAL © AD, 2007-2009 ================================================== Scan Start Time: 2009/12/03 16:52 Program Version: Version 1.3.5.0 Windows Version: Windows XP SP3 ================================================== Drivers ——————- Name: dump_atapi.sys Image Path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\dump_atapi.sys Address: 0xF2DE5000 Size: 98304 File Visible: No Signed: - Sorry for the delay but things get crazy around here

For starters go to your Add Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions of Java except this latest version
Java™ 6 Update 17 <–Keep

Also uninstall this older version of Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Lets get a more current picture.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
No problem. Thanks for the help.

I ran TFC. When trying to shut down, it hung on the "windows is shutting down" screen, so I killed it by holing in the power button until it shut off. When I rebooted, it loaded into windows and bluescreened when I tried to open explorer. It said something about irql_not_less_or_equal and it was going to reboot from a restore point. It said if I received the same message on a subsequent reboot, that I had a significant problem.

After rebooting I did not get the error message again. It did ask me if I wanted to report the problem (microsoft's little error reporting tool that pops up when a program hangs or whatever). Here's some of the info from that:

After that, I ran RSIT. Here are the logs:

Message: The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers for
a repeated number of attempts. For the next 30 seconds the
DNS Client service will not use the network to avoid further
network performance problems. It will resume its normal behavior

Hi,

Some systems are a bit finicky with TFC but its a great tool.

Nothing bad on any of your logs.

Lets try a few things and if nothing comes up then I can link you to a windows forum that can help you sort through your programs. Have you installed any new software or hardware prior to your slowdown?

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan…click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
I'm not exacly sure on the slowdown. I upgraded from IE6 to IE8 a few months ago and it seemed a little slower than IE6. Also, the dropdown doesn't work on the address bar which is kind of annoying. I was thinking of downgrading to IE7 to see if that solves anything.

About a month ago, I installed a new brother printer. I was gone for about a month and when I returned last week I did a firmware upgrade for the printer. That's about the time it started freezing on me, but I don't know if it's related. And I can't really pin down how long it's been slow other than to peg it back to when I installed IE8, although I think it's worse now than it was then.

I may also have installed/uninstalled a few random things in the past week or so while trying to speed up my computer. It almost seems like something is running in the background bogging it down, but I dont have any virus scanners or constantly running malware software. Hopefully it's a messed up registry entry or driver or something that I can easily correct.

Good Morning,

Nothing bad on the scans. Why don't you try physically unhooking the printer and then uninstall the printer software via add remove programs and lets see if this fixes the slowdown. If not its a simple task reinstalling it

Open Hijackthis
  • Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Click on Save List.
  • The list will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Open up Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab and click on RESET INTERNET EXPLORER SETTING > Reset ………takes a few seconds. Then ok your way out. Close IE and then open it again and see if this helped your browser issues
I uninstalled the new printer and reset explorer. I don't think it has helped at all, but I'll be able to tell you more later this afternoon after I've had a chance to play around with it. At this point I'm wondering if my best bet is to get an external drive, move all my junk over to it to free up a ton of space, restore to an earlier date and downgrade explorer to IE7… Adobe Acrobat - You have a large hard drive and its pretty full, still plenty of space but its starting to get crowded. An external drive is a great idea, look into one at Costco, they had two that where pretty reasonable.

I think what I would do it to post in our windows forum and let them help you sort it out.. We just do malware removal in this one.

Let them know you posted here and that we didn't find anything bad on your system, you can link them to this thread if you like.

Good Luck,

Ken :)
