This came up while visiting hxxp://rapid8.com. The background is green and the box is black. There is a red circle with an x in the middle, with a message bubble every few minutes or so, in the system tray. I cannot run cmd.exe, taskmgr.exe or the like. I did have restore enabled, despite my not being able to access it or any Windows functions. I would also like to mention I have no other XP computer to draw files from, but I do have the install disc. It seems to be simiIar in nature to :http://forums.whatthetech.com/Your_system_infected_Fake_desktop_backround_t106973.html&st=30 so I thought about using ComboFix, but decided to wait for an opinion. Thanks all for your time. Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Upon using .exehelper, the background and system tray problems were gone and I can access taskmngr etc … I didn't get log.txt while running exeHelper. For that I apologize. Also, just now, when I went to visit Youtube with my Mozilla browser, a message was displayed on the page "This web site is restricted based on your security preferences. Your system is infected. Please Activate your anti virus software" , even though upon a second loading it disappeared and my page loaded as normal…. Odd. One more thing. When looking in my task manager processes section prior to all this happening, the file which I feel did this was a "dumprep.exe" ; it was a local service and had multiple entries. When I attempted to close it, it mentioned the program as being "locked". EDITS: Every time I look around, I find something else amiss. I have no sound and upon reloading the youtube page again, the message popped up. The program that runs my sound drivers is still in operation (Realtek Audio Manager) , but regardless, no sound. When looking in Control Panel\Appearance & Themes\Display Properties\Desktop, there is a file which has firefox's icon called "critical_warning". In this section, I still cannot interact with the scroll bar or Browse buttons. Also, all the data I value has been backed up on a separate drive, so Formatting and reinstalling Windows is an option. Even after this problem is fixed, I am considering doing this anyway.
Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
