[Raptor]

Hi,

For the last few days my system has been frequently slowing down to a crawl, with sharp spikes in CPU useage. Also, whenever I don't use the start menu/bar at the bottom for a while, it becomes inaccessible and I have to click it and then wait about 10-20 seconds before it rapidly spurts up. I'm fairly sure this is malware as my computer is fairly new and powerful (dual core 3.0ghz, 4 gb ram, running XP) although I'm not sure where I would have gotten it from this time. My HD also needs a defragging but I doubt that's the cause. I figured I'd run it by you guys and see if there's anything to be seen.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, SmitfraudFix, MBAM, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.


Please disable this program and leave it disabled until we are finished.

SPYBOT TEATIMER

• Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
• On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
• Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
• Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
• Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
• If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
• Exit Spybot S&D when done.
• (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All

Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• 
• Then click Remove Selected .
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
• Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

So I was trying to run Spybot, and it wasn't running. I couldn't access the start menu and then I tried my shortcut on the desktop, and this produced nothing. After trying several times I noticed I had several Spybot .exe processes all stacked up in my task manager. I gave up and restarted. After the restart my system started acting faster, Spybot opened with no problem, and I performed all the other steps. Things are much better than they were before restart but I'm still noticing some hang-ups. I think this has been the way of it really, after a restart it seems okay but then give it some time and it starts going down the tubes.

After I uninstalled Viewpoint in the control panel, there doesn't seem to be any Service: viewpoint type process in Hijack this. Things are as normal as they were on restart on the computer, no slowdown or locking of the taskbar.

My computer is acting up again, this time on fresh restart. Something I neglected to mention is that I have a secondary harddrive, but it's dead or basically dead. However, it still is occasionally detected by my computer. Is it possible this is causing the slowdown? I remember a broken external harddrive caused massive slowdown on my last computer whenever it was plugged in. I must say though it's been broken for about a month or so now and I didn't have problems back then.
