Hi Everyone,

I've been having a problem over the past few weeks where my PC just freezes. This happens at various times, sometimes while trying to run a virus scan, or sometimes with only IE open.

Sometimes I receive an error message (and sometimes not). One of the messages I have received is: "Direct OCR Error. Error reading from the registry. Please restart Windows and try again." When I clicked OK I then got another error that mentioned "SyncServices.exe". I did restart and had no error message then. I did a Google search on this error message and it seems to have something to do with scanning images to text???? I had only just turned on my PC and had not actually done anything at all. One time after restarting I just got the "blue screen", but then after re-starting again all seemed fine.

This all started happening after I received an email from a friend that had not actually been sent by them. I thought I might have had a virus and I posted over on the Malware/Virus section, but they've concluded that my PC doesn't have malware/virus and it could be a Windows issue.

I have Win XP SP3 and use IE8. Please let me know what further information you might need.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lisa
Hi Jephree,

Thanks for your reply.

1. I went through the “Event Viewer” error logs and have some information about that below. There were a lot of them, but there seem to be four or five that appear regularly.

2. I guess my PC is about 4 years old – and no, I have not cleaned it inside. How do you usually clean yours?

When I first got the PC there was an issue with the fan and a suspected overheating. At the time Active SMART was installed to monitor the temperature. I still have it and it does warn about temperature changes (it has actually just told me that the temperature is 39 degrees and has a status of “OK”). When I look at the Active SMART log the only recent (in the past week) entry is:

26 September 2009 09:07:07 :: ALERT
[WDC WD2000JB-00GVA0, S/N:WD-WMAL81394464] - SMART attribute changed:
Attribute : 03 - Spin Up Time
Last checked value : 129
New value : 130

3.I installed and ran “Who Crashed” and the only recent entry is:

On Mon 21/09/2009 4:43:57 AM your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: kmixer.sys
Bugcheck code: 0x10000050 (0xE3FD9718, 0x0, 0xF18DD0FC, 0x1)
Error: Unknown
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmixer.sys
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: Kernel Mode Audio Mixer
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Likely the culprit is another driver on your system which cannot be identified.

Is there anything in this information that seems to point to a particular problem?

Thanks again,
Lisa

Hi Jephree, I'll have a look inside the PC and see if it needs a clean. I think what you are referring to as "Inter Video" is nVidia which is my graphics card? These errors with nVidia occur every day - but my PC does not freeze-up every day. I don't have a TV tuner, so it's looking for something that does not exist. I have read a bit about this when searching on nVidia forums and it seems to be a problem with the driver….but from what I have read, updating the driver does not necesarily fix the problem and can actually cause more problems! I do have all Windows updates. I'll let you know what happens re the physical cleaning but I don't think it will help as I mentioned before it is not likely to be an issue with overheating as I have the temperature monitored and I'm not getting any reports of overheating…anyway, it's worth having a look…meanwhile if anyone has other ideas please let me know! Thanks, Lisa
Lisa, InterVideo is the owner of WinDVD, has nothing to do with your nVidia video card or driver.

The first thing I would do is use msconfig (Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter) and disable anything nVidia relates, including these:

"NvCplDaemon"=C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll [2004-10-29 4620288]
"nwiz"=nwiz.exe /install []
"NvMediaCenter"=C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll [2004-10-29 86016]

Also these:

"QuickTime Task"=C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe [2008-05-27 413696]
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe [2008-01-11 39792]

and these if you don't know what they are or use them:

"MagicRotation"=C:\Program Files\MagicRotation\MagicPvt.exe [2005-12-26 1089536]
"mxomssmenu"=C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch Status\maxmenumgr.exe [2008-07-21 169312]

Also anything related to Google, like toolbar, desktop, updater.

I don't think any of these are neede either:

Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
Color Calibration.lnk - C:\Program Files\SEC\MagicTune3.5_Client\GammaTray.exe
InterVideo WinCinema Manager.lnk - C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common\Bin\WinCinemaMgr.exe
MagicTune 3.5.lnk - C:\Program Files\SEC\MagicTune3.5_Client\MagicTuneTray.exe

Reboot and see how the system runs. You can always re-enable any that you think you need.

Do this after following Jephree's advice about cleaning out the inside of your computer (very carefully, with power off and unplugged please).
