[Resolved] TDSS Removal

Read many posts here and elsewhere. I have ad-aware, HJT, Combofix, MalwareBytes installed. ad-aware finds the TDSS trojan, Malwarebytes finds C:\windows\system32\uacinit.dll. These do not remove on reboot. Executed malwarebytes in safe and normal modes to no avail.

I see from this forum, HJT and Combofix may be the way to go here but I'd like supervision with this. Probably need to rename Combofix to get it to launch.

I am starting this new thread as recommended in other post replies.

Please help.

Hi mgordon23, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Your system has been infected by one or more Rootkits/Backdoor Trojans.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

I suggest you read:

  • Danger: Remote Access Trojans.
  • When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
  • How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and Credit Card Fraud?

Combofix is a very powerful tool and should not be used without supervision.

What are you using for an antivirus program?

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

How is the computer at the moment?

Thanks
Hello Oldman906,

Thanks for the welcome.

Encountered a problem and stopped the process steps.

Followed your directions explicitly:

Ran HJT,
Performed scan only,
Found the line R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html,
Checked this line,
Clicked Fix Checked,
Closed HJT,
Opened Malwarebytes,
Clicked Check for Updates,
Malwarebytes updated and closed but did not reopen.

I tried to manually reopen MBAM and got the following pop-up window response; "The database you are using is not supported by this version of Malwarebytes' Anti Malware. Download the latest version of the program."

I did not expect this to occur so I stopped at this point. Should I download Malwarebytes' again? Or other direction?
Please advise.

FYI - I downloaded and updated Malwarebytes just yesterday. I am replying to this post on a clean computer.

Thanks for your help here.
Hello Oldman 906, Please disregard my last reply - I didn't initially notice that a new MBAM.exe file was present in the Program folder. Prior, I had to rename this file to MBA.exe for it to run so I inadvertently opened MBA.exe. I will follow the rest of your directions and then reply. Thanks

Computer is calm - no apparent issues.
Hi mgorden23

What are you using for an antivirus program?

I see some Norton (symantec) installed. Is this something you used previously?

You have some very old vulnerable java installed.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05

Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 16 if found! :yeah:

Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file ( jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe) to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Next, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
  • On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
  • On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
  • check all boxes
  • Click OK

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Set the Save In to Desktop
  • click the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Please post back with
  • Kaspersky log
  • new HJT log
  • information concerning your antivirus program

Thanks
Hello Oldman 960,

Excuse me for not providing anti-virus programming in my last reply. True, Norton symantic is a previous program used. The current is ATT Yahoo!Online Protection. As you can see, ad-aware is here too and Windows Defender runs.

Here are the logs from executing your last process steps.

Thanks for the continued help.
Hi mgordon23,

The Kaspersky detections are in files we have already quarantined. They will be removed when we remove the tools.

Excuse me for not providing anti-virus programming in my last reply.

That's ok. It would seem that uses McAfee so you can uninstall the Norton remnants.

ad-aware is here too and Windows Defender runs.

These are antispyware programs. You now have another, MBAM, which is a very good on demand scanner that I suggest you keep and use.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall

LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition

Download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop.

Next Double click on Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Post back and let us know how you made out. If all is well, we'll clean up our tools then.

Thanks
Hi mgorden23,

Ok, we'll clean up.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • combofix.exe (you renamed it to combofi.exe)

We need a little tool.
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Updates and upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. Just add a firewall.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.
