i have a Compaq Presario F700 with Windows Vista Basic, i used to have NOD32 3.0 but the license expired. Windows Firewall.
I just got Avira, its installed and working i can update and everything, but i cant use the AntiVir Guard, everytime i try to run it it gets stopped, i tried to run it from services, with the firewall off, i read about erasing the wbem repository but couldn't delete the file, i changed the config of my firewall to "allow" Avira but dont know if i did it right, so right now i feel like i dont have an antivirus and its killing me, help please.

i dont know if its because i cant completely erase the Norton that came with my laptop, and i think there still is some kind of remains of Avast, but i hardly have the time to clean everything up.

THANKS!!

Hello charly-contreras,
Welcome to What the Tech.
My name is OCD, I will be helping you with your log today.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Hello charly-contreras,

  • You may want to print out these instructions for reference prior to proceeding.
  • This solution is specifically tailored for this particular problem, please do not attempt to use this solution on another computer.
  • If you have any questions, or are uncertain about any steps please ask 'before' proceeding.

You have two (2) Anti-Virus programs running. This is not a good situation. Having more than one AV running at any one time may cause a conflict.
You need to uninstall either Avira or Avast4. Since you just installed Avira, I recommend you uninstall the older Avast4.

You also stated you are having some difficulty removing an old install of Norton that came with your computer. We can address that also.
Note : You should first attempt to remove your Norton/Symantec product using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel
(Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs
Scroll Down and locate the following programs:
  • Avast4
  • Norton or Symantec in the name
Select each one of the programs, then select remove.
(if the program is not listed don't be alarmed, just continue with the list)

Exit the Control Panel when finished.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure successful removal of all Norton references.

If no entries are present in the Windows Add/Remove Programs you still need to run Norton Removal Tool below.

Please go to http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen…005033108162039 and select the product you have

  • Download the Norton Removal Tool.
  • Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  • On the Windows desktop, Right-click the Norton Removal Tool icon and select "Run As Administrator" to run the tool.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
