Ok, I realize a lot of people have this problem, but your advice seems to differ person to person. I have tried to fix it myself, but I had no success. I figured I would get some real help before I messed things up worse than I may have already.

Basically, I have the google redirect virus which attacks Firefox, IE, and Chrome. Also, I have lost the ability to burn data DVDs which means I don't have a good way to back up my data. Also my system restore isn't working. I thought these were unrelated, but I see other people have had the same set of problems. Thanks in advance.

Hello CrashInput,
Welcome to What the Tech.
My name is OCD, I will be helping you with your log today.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Hello CrashInput,

  • You may want to print out these instructions for reference prior to proceeding.
  • This solution is specifically tailored for this particular problem, please do not attempt to use this solution on another computer.
  • If you have any questions, or are uncertain about any steps please ask 'before' proceeding.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

You have a few questionable programs installed. These are most likely the reason you have been infected in the first place. Please read the information provided:

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

You have BitTorrent & uTorrent, P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing them.

Please see this topic for more information:
Perils of P2P File Sharing

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

I would recommend that you uninstall BitTorrent & uTorrent, however that choice is up to you.

To remove these please go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs
Scroll Down and locate the following programs:
  • BitTorrent
  • uTorrent
  • Viewpoint / Viewpoint Manager / Viewpoint Media Player
Select the program, then select remove.
(if the program is not listed don't be alarmed, just continue)
NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

* IMPORTANT : Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
*Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. The log will be located here C:\ComboFix.txt (Provided 'C' is your root directory)
Notes:
  • Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
  • CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Give it at least 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".

ok, new devlopement. Monday Windows Securtity started giving me virus warnings. I was trying to figure out what was going on with my anti-virus program but within about 5 min my system completely crashed. Now anything I try to restart my computer it gets to a certain point in the windows loading process and doesn't get any further. I think I might be in some serious trouble here, but if I can get some files off my computer I will be ok with reinstalling windows. I can get to a menu where I have options on where I want to boot from. I can also get into the system BIOS. But I don't see an option to start in safe mode. a friend suggested I use something called Knoppix live cd to get the files off. I have my windows reinstall CD, but was also debating switching to Linux. Any suggestions on how to get the files off? Thanks.

Crashinput,

You have two (2) options on how to proceed:

Boot into Safe Mode wth Networking on the infected computer and follow the instructions below
Download ComboFix from a different computer and transfer the file to the infected computer and run in Safe Mode.

If you chose to download the files from another computer you will not be able to install ComboFix's Recovery Console

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot in Safe Mode:

  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc.
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
  • Select the option for Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys.
  • Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Well, it appears that everything is fixed. Google is not being redirected anymore. I was able to create a restore point. I didn't have a blank DVD to fully test the DVD burner, but I did not get the usually error message when I started the data burning process. Thanks a lot, I thought I was in serious trouble, but it looks like everything is fixed.
