…you name it, I seem to have it.

First of all, thank you for providing this service. Everything I've been trying has seemed like sweeping back the ocean with a broom. I'm fairly computer savvy, but this problem is clearly beyond me.

Briefly:
When I run a Google search, I get redirected, and have to go back and copy and paste the link manually.
I can't run any spyware/malware programs (AVG, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, SmitFraud) that I've used in the past.
Whatever infection I have seems to be preventing me from running any program that involves fixing spyware/trojans/viruses.
When I try to boot into Safe Mode, I get a BSoD.
I'm prevented from accessing System Restore.
I'm using Windows XP on a 2002 Dell.

I've managed to run HijackThis from a flash drive, and the log is below. Thanks again, and let me know what other information you need.

Hello Sausage,
Welcome to What the Tech.
My name is OCD, I will be helping you with your log today.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HijackThis log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Hello Sausage,

Your System is infected with Virut!!

Virut is a file infecting virus which is able to modify itself each and every time it runs. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto.
For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to format/reinstall the operating system on this machine.

Virut CANNOT be cleaned and your computer HAS been compromised. It is important that you take the appropriate steps listed below: (if applicable)

  • Since these infections may be used for remote access, or even remote control of an infected system, temporarily disconnect it from the Internet as soon as possible.
  • If you used the infected system for online banking, to perform any online financial transactions (including eBay and Paypal), or access any sensitive information online, please get to a known clean computer and change your passwords as soon as possible.
  • Closely monitor all bank and credit card statements. In the event you do notice suspicious activity, it’s important you act quickly.
Additional information can be found:here

Right now, the best thing you can do is to backup, preferably to CD, all your important data, documents, pictures, movies, and songs.

DO NOT backup any applications or installers and DO NOT backup any files with the following extensions:

.exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files

For more information on Virut, and why you need to reformat, have a read of miekiemoes blog here.

To find out how to carry out a Reformat and Reinstall, please see this page.

I am sorry I don't have better news for you.

Sounds charming. I'll start the backup and reinstall process. I'll post again as soon as I finish. Thanks again. Sausage

I'll start the backup and reinstall process. I'll post again as soon as I finish.

Sausage,

Just wanted to touch base and see how you were coming along.
Okay, I've reinstalled Windows XP and I just got back online. It seems to clean as a bean, but is there anything else you would recommend that I do going forward? Sausage,

Well done so far, but there is much to do to protect yourself from future infections.

It appears that you don't have any security software installed on your computer.
This must be taken care of first. Please go to one of the links below in each category and download and install a Firewall and Anti - Virus protection.

Your log shows you are only running Windows XP SP1, you must get this updated as soon as possible to Windows XP SP3

Windows Critical Updates

The easiest way to ensure you don't miss any of the critical Windows Updates is to set your computer up to receive Automatic Updates.
To set your computer up for Automatic Updates please do the following:
  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
  • Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
  • Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
  • Select Automatic and choose a frequency and time that's convenient for you to get the updates.
  • Click Apply, then OK
  • Close the Control Panel.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Alternate Method of getting Windows Updates
Internet Explorer browsers needed to use this method
  • Get Windows Updates > > here
  • Select the Express button - Get high-priority updates (recommended)
  • Allow all updates
  • Reboot when finished
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

On your next post please provide the following:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
  • Gmer.txt

Okay.

First of all, thanks for all your help, OCD.

I installed Service Pack 3, the Comodo firewall and the AVG anti-virus. Unfortunately, I can no longer access the Internet from that machine. I still haven't figured that part out yet.

The DDS report and the gmer reports are below and the 'Attach' file is attached.

Thanks again,

Sausage

Sausage,

Can you tell me if you lost internet access AFTER you installed Comodo?

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Training the Comodo Firewall to allow the programs you use.

  • In the Comodo Firewall > select Firewall in the top menu
  • Select Advanced > Firewall Behavior Settings > General Settings
  • Move the Firewall Security Level to Training Mode
  • Select the Alert Settings tab
  • Move the Alert Frequecny Level selector to Very High
  • Make sure all boxes are checked
  • Select OK to close
These settings can be changed once you have "trained" your firewall. You will receive popup warnings
from Comodo, please review each one carefully and decide it you wish to allow or block the particular program.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

If you still cannot access the internet after training the Comodo firewall please describe in detail what happens when you try to access the internet.
(include any error messages received)

Hi OCD, I did the suggestions in your last post, and the PC still can't connect. It connected fine before installing Comodo, AVG, gmer and Service Pack 3. It seems more of a driver/ethernet controller issue than anything. Not being savvy enough, I'm not sure. Did the logs and attachment have any clues or, at the very least, does Virut seem gone? Thanks again for your help. Sausage
Okay, I installed a driver and now Comodo recognized the connection. The Internet is back. I'll post another HijackThis log. Thanks again, and let me know if I need to do anything else. Sausage,

Glad to hear you solved the internet access issue.

Run HijackThis and select Do a System Scan Only

Before proceeding, make sure all programs and browser windows are closed, EXCEPT HijackThis
Place check marks next to the following items:

  • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
  • R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{d8608d46-1567-4623-a0b1-bfd9a40bc421} - (no file)
Now with all browsers closed, click on Fix Checked, then EXIT the program

- - - - - Next - - - - -

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
  • Then, click: Save
  • Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users:
If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%
.)
Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • Kaspersky log
  • Tell me how your computer is running at the moment

Okay, I did the first step with HijackThis…

But Kaspersky stops when it gets to the point of updating its database, and won't begin its online scan. At first, I thought it was a Java issue, but I installed the latest Java and the same thing happens.

I get a pop-up window with the following error message:

Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program.

You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 database. With the latest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0. [ERROR: Key is expired]

I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Thanks again,

Sausage

Sausage,

Let's try a different scanner.

Please run: Eset Online Scanner
(You will need Internet Explorer to run this scan)

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • ESET log.txt
  • Tell me how your computer is running at the moment.

OCD, Okay, when I ran the ESET scan, at the end, it didn't give me a 'Details' tab. So I can't copy and paste a .txt file. But there were 'No Threats Found', no infected files. The computer's running fine, if a little slow, especially getting online. But it doesn't seem like that's a virus/spyware/malware issue because none of the antispyware programs have found anything since my reinstall. Is there anything else you need? Thanks again for all your help, Sausage
