My laptop's motherboard died but my files are still in the hard drive. I think the laptop has an internal hard drive so it wouldn't be as easy as taking it out and connecting it with an usb. What would be a good way to retrieve the files? Thanks in advance.
Assuming the hard drive is in good working order then it is as simple as just taking it out, and adding it as a slave to a working system.
Removing the drive is usually very simple, on the underside of the PC you will see 2 or 3 panels\covers, the one in the middle is usually for the ram, the long one on the edge is the battery, so the remaining one (often close to a side) is the one you need, undo the screw(s), and remove the drive, it should be very logical how to do this when you see it.
Now depending on what kind of drive it is (ide\Sata) and what you have in your working system will determine how you proceed, if it's Sata, and your working system has Sata, simply shut down and remove the mains lead (for safety), then connect the laptop drive as you normally would, don't worry too much about securing it, so long as you can rest it so it's not touching the board or any cards it should be fine, then plug the mains back in and fire it up, the system will pick it up as a new device and install it, if it wants to reboot to complete the install allow it, once done you have full access to the drive to save whatever files you want.
Should this be an ide drive, the process is exactly the same, BUT, you will probably need to buy an adaptor to do this, good news is they are pretty cheap, and very useful as they avoid the need to go inside the working system, they just connect via USB, the following link is what you would need, but I don't suggest buying from this seller, I don't know them so can't say anything, although they seem fine, it is simply to show what you will need if it comes to it, hope this helps. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-to-SATA-IDE-…id=p3286.c0.m14
If you want to post the make\model of the laptop we can look up the spec for it, equally you can do the same, just Google the model and go through some of the results to see what they say, as the motherboard is dead you can't fire it up and use alternate methods to check, so the only 2 options are take it out and look, or Google the details for a summary of the spec, as I said if you are unsure post the make\model here, and any tag number it may have (some makes use a tag number) and we can look as well and confirm for you.
As 8210Guy said if the drive is in working order you can use this kit USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE OTB to hook up that drive to another computer to be used as a USB External drive and copy the needed file you want. Works real well, I have used it a lot.
