Had a nasty spyware/virus infection in my nephew's computer recently. I used some scanners to "clean" it. FYI, it was called System Security 2009 or something. Anyway, after I cleaned it up everything seemed to be fine. Then the blue screens of death started. They have been occurring pretty often and I am out of ideas. My HJT log is below.

Thanks for helping,
Josh

More info. Avast virus scanner just popped up with a virus warning. It says the following: File name: C:\WINDWOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe Malware name: Win32:Vitro Malware type: Virus/Worm VPS version: 090808-0, 08/08/2009 I clicked the recommended action to move it to the chest.
I may have some bad news for you. The description of your AVG alert along with a certain entry in your HijackThis log may indicate that you have Virut. If you do, I'm afraid you have no choice other than a format/re-install.

To check whether you are indeed infected with Virut, please do the following:
  • Download VAPrep2.bat and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click VAPrep2.bat to run it. It will only take a moment to complete.
  • When done, please right-click the VAPrep folder which should now be on your Desktop. Select Send To >> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Next, please go to this webpage.
  • Browse to the VAPrep.zip zipped folder you just created.
  • Click Send File.
Once done, you can delete the VAPrep folder and .zip file from you Desktop.
I'm afraid the uploaded samples confirms that you do indeed have Virut, and it has spread to your system files.

You have a real nasty infection on your system. Virut/Virtob is a file infector virus with IRC bot functionality which infects all .exe and .scr files, downloads more malicious files to your system, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. In many cases the infected files cannot be deleted and anti-malware scanners cannot disinfect them properly. When disinfection is attempted, the files become corrupted and the system may become irreparable. The explains why you have been experiencing erratic crashing on your computer.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read "When should I re-format?" and "Reformatting the computer or troubleshooting; which is best?".

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay and forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach.

Virut/Virtob is contracted and spread by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. Those who attempt to get software for free may end up with a computer system so badly damaged that recovery is not possible and a Repair Install will NOT help! Reinstalling Windows without first wiping the entire hard drive with a repartition and/or format will not remove the infection. The reinstall will only overwrite the Windows files. Any malware on the system will still be there afterwards. Starting over, reformatting the drive and performing a clean install removes everything.

Right now, the best thing you can do is to backup, preferably to CD, all your important data, documents, pictures, movies, and songs.

DO NOT backup any applications or installers and DO NOT backup any files with the following extensions:
  • .exe
  • .scr
  • .htm
  • .html
  • .xml
  • .zip
  • .rar
  • .jpg
  • .pdf
  • .doc
For more information on Virut, and why you need to reformat, have a read of miekiemoes blog here.

To find out how to carry out a Reformat and Reinstall, please see this page.

Any questions just let me know. I am sorry there is nothing more we could do.
Wow bad news for my nephew. I'm curious about the "uploaded files". I am just now seeing your replies and never uploaded anything. Has there been a mistake somewhere? Do I still need to do the stuff in your first reply? Thanks, Josh
Hmm, there's a chance someone else read this topic and uploaded the files. The only reason I thought it was you was because they gave a link to this topic. Did you do this step?

If not, then it must've been someone else. Please do this step if you can as we are looking for samples of this infection. I can then also double-check whether you have Virut as well as our mysterious friend
After lots of fighting with the laptop, I finally was able to use a jump drive and get the file uploaded. Hopefully it won't confirm the worst.
Got it (twice I think). I'm afraid it does indeed confirm the worst - Virut has spread to your system files. The information in post#4 is now relevant to you. I am sorry, there is no cure for this :(

EDIT: Nope only once, coincidently someone else uploaded one at exactly the same second as you did (from a different topic).
Ok well thank you for helping. The only way to go from here is to request a system restore CD from Dell (if he doesn't already have one), correct? Also, he is an avid World of Warcraft player. Is there any way I can save the patch files (some nearly 1GB) so he doesn't have to download them again? Thanks again, Josh
Yes, a system restore CD from the manufacturer is a good option if possible.

You can backup anything that isn't one of these file:

  • .exe
  • .scr
  • .htm
  • .html
  • .xml
  • .zip
  • .rar
  • .jpg
  • .pdf
  • .doc

Best option would be to backup to a CD or DVD as these can't become compromised.

Make sure you scan files before loading them back onto a clean computer - just to be sure.

Any other question just let me know.
Sounds good. Wish there was an easier solution, but at least you didn't say "throw it away and buy a new one". lol Thanks again. You can close this thread. Josh
