To admins reading this: Please delete my last topic, Its messed up.

My computer occasionally freezes, and a blue screen pops up sometimes, causing me to restart the computer. Also strange pop-ups keep coming up. Computer very slow. I ran malwarebytes and there were lots of infected files, tried to delete them, but they keep on coming. Heres the hijack this log:

A combination of one of the lines in your log and the description of the PC's symptoms suggests to me that you have been the victim of a Virut infection. This nasty is what is called a polymorphic file infecter and is the death knell for the Operating System.
This "file infecter" part means that the malware injects malicious code into executable files and in Virut's case, it damages them in the process. Removing this code doesn't repair the damage, and this is probably why your PC is now unstable. The "polymorphic" part means that the exact code that is injected changes, so that it is more difficult to identify and remove.
All in all, there is nothing that can be done for your machine apart from to back up any important files and then reformat and reinstall Windows. You need to be aware though that .exe and .scr files may be infected, so you will need to avoid transfering any of them to a fresh install as you could just reinfect it.

See here for a little light reading on the subject.
A couple of questions: 2) Is there any way of disinfecting the files but not reformat? I remember getting help here and Tomk or someone saying that even though reformating is the safest way, you can still delete all of it by using the softwares. I am willing to give it a try if reformating means deleting all my files, as its too troublesome. Is that the ONLY solution? 3) If I keep running Malwarebytes and deleting the infected files, will some EXE programs not work? Why? 4) I don't understand how I got infected in the first place. 5)Can I do a system restore? will this fix it? *** I've been reading on this virus, people report success with Bart’s PE builder and Dr Webcureit…I would like to try this please…anything but reformatting. Also did AVG offered a Virut Removal Tool?
Problem one: A cleaning tool needs to identify all the malicious code before it can remove it. As the code changes, (the polymorphic bit), it is possible that a removal tool will not be able to identify it all and some infected files will remain to infect further files.

Problem two: The files that are infected are damaged during the infection and removing the infection doesn't undo the damage.

I remember getting help here and Tomk or someone saying that even though reformating is the safest way, you can still delete all of it by using the softwares.

If this is reference to a Virut infection, then while it may be possible to detect and remove all the malicious code, it cannot be guaranteed as the exact code doesn't remain constant. If you add to that the fact that the damaged files will still be damaged, there isn't really a better option that R & R.

If I keep running Malwarebytes and deleting the infected files, will some EXE programs not work? Why?

What MBAM may be detecting is malicious files being downloaded from the internet by Virut - it has this capability. As long as either Virut or some other infection is active, this will continue and MBAM will detect and remove stuff.

I don't understand how I got infected in the first place.

You may have downloaded an infected file or opened an infected email attachment, visited a dodgy website, or a legitimate one that had been hacked, i'm afraid that malware writers are very clever at doing this sort of thing.

Can I do a system restore? will this fix it?

If it was that simple, then everybody who had this infection would solve it this way.

Description

Virut is a polymorphic file infector with some additional features. It spreads all around the drive and infects even files infected by another virus previously. The only symptoms are a strange HDD activity while infecting, and also unwanted TCP traffic. Virut tries to connect you into an IRC network under the user name "Virtu" and zombify you. Unfortunately, the cleaning of this virus is very difficult or almost impossible.

My best advice is that you R & R the PC as this is the best way to solve your problem.
If you start a new thread here and explain the situation, somebody will be able to walk you through the whole process - it's the sort of thing this section of the site is for and they are good at it.
There is a post at the top that deals with reformatting, but it is possible that you have a Factory Restore option built into the PC and i'd check that one out first, which is why it's better to start a new thread.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
