My PC has started doing some funny things.

On my desktop, it's installed some short cuts to porn sites - even after I delete it - the next time I turn on my machine - the links reappear. I also get a pop up window saying 'Malicious software removal tool - Your computer can be infected with sping programs (spyware). It is recommended that you run a quick system check now.'

I've pressed cancel but the pop up appears regularly.

Today when I've just switched on my machine - it's come up with a windows message the DEP has stopped a program executing - didn't get details because I could not screen shot the message.

If someone could possibly help me look into this - it would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Below is a HiJack This log.

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate

Thanks so much for responding. Your assistance is much appreciated.

I've included a document with screenshots of the error pop ups.

Today I switched on my computer & Windows did start up. But during start up I get the 'Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows' pop up. - Pic 1

Nothing appears on the desktop. The only way around this I've found is clicking the 'What should I do?' :link. That opens the HP Help & support centre page & I access the internet through a link in there. I open another Windows tab - in the address I type in 'C:' which brings up another error pop up box, which says 'Windows cannot find '/idlist,:3788:2296,C:\'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.' - Pic 2

Then I get a userinit.exe - Application error - Pic 3.

But this is the only way I can get the start bar & all my icons on my desktop.

Sorry for the essay!

Below is the Hijack this log.

Hi I'm using my laptop now since my PC won't connect to the internet. An update on what has happened since. Norton 360 detected W32.Virut.CF - it tried to fix this & required a reboot. I just had a quick read on the internet about it - sounds pretty awful - and sounds like the awful bit happened to me! Since the reboot - the computer seems to have died. When I switch on the PC - it came up with a disk formatting issue & checked the disk. It now comes up with a log on pop up (which has never come up previously). The DEP popup window also appears. Where previously I could click on the What should I do link - a windows error appears saying it can't find the PChelp file (or something like that) - sorry I couldn't screenshot the last error. Nothing appeared on the desktop - I got around this by CTRL+ALT+DEL and finding a link to open IE - which I then try to open C: - that somehow starts things up and puts all the icons on the desktop. Big problem now is that some of the icons don't have a proper icon - eg word document. My PC will now no longer connect to the Internet - when I diagnose connection problem - I get a 'res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm# in the address bar. A HPProduct Assistant box keeps appearing saying that 'The feature you are trying to use in on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Inser the HPProduct assistant disk and click ok. I can't cancel this. I can run HiJack this but am thinking that if I use a flash drive to copy it over - it may infect the flash drive. Massive dramas hey! Thanks for looking into this for me. Much appreciated. Kind of expecting the worst (ie. throw away your PC!!)
Virut infects (.exe/.com/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files).
It will continue to get worse until your pc is "dead in the water", which appears to have happened here.

Nothing should be saved from the infected pc.
Do you rememeber anything that you might have done for this to happen?

I suggest you do this:

Starting at: FORMATING PARTITIONING AND INSTALLING
http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Reformat…tem_t91962.html

DO NOT save anything from that pc.
Someone here downloaded a file converter (from youtube video to mp3). And since then there's been problems. It was fine before this happened. Will start reformatting tonight. Your help is much appreciated!

I hope others read this and see's what can happen when you download songs / videos.
Sorry you have to do this but until we Malware Fighters / Developers can create a fix, it's the best we can do when it comes to Virut infections. :smack:
