When starting windows in normal mode, the computer seems to be booting fine but the end result is a blank screen ( No icons or task bar). At this point, the only thing that I can do is to turn the computer off. The computer appears to work ok when it is started in safe mode. I used the Trend Micro software to scan and nothing was found.

Please help.

Below is the Hijack log.

The issues with your computer that you list, doesn't appear to be related to Malware/Spyware/Virus but we can have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
[external image: Posted Image]
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .
I was able to execute the ATF Cleaner and download the mbam-setup.exe file. When I try to run the mbam-setup, as the administrator or a user, nothing happens. Also, these steps are being run from safe mode with networking. Thanks for the assistance.
Try these 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. 3. Select Restore Defaults Option #2 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. then click the web tab, then under the web pages to display on your desktop if it has "security" you uncheck this and delete Option #3 In Task Manager, do you have Explorer.exe running? If it's running, End process on it. Open your Task Manager.(alt / ctrl /del) Click File and select New Task (Run…) Then type explorer.exe to start it.

I don't see a display icon to click on.

For option #3 the explorer.exe is running.

End process on it.

Open your Task Manager.(alt / ctrl /del) Click File and select New Task (Run…)

Then type explorer.exe to start it.
Could this possibly be the issue?

STOP - Before anyone wastes time going over the hijack log - that was not the problem! It was not a virus that was causing the problem - it was a windows update! It seems one of the recent updates changed the power setting to "Quiet Office" and the "Presentation Mode" was running. After switching back to "Entertainment" mode all of the icons re-appeared and the stupid "presentation" stopped running at start up.

I sure hope this helps someone else before driving them crazy like it did me!!!
