Hi nojelo,

Let's see if we can get explorer running.

Download OTL to your desktop. You won't be able to see it, we'll run it from Task Manager.

  • Holding down your left mouse button, highlight all the text in the codebox below.
  • Do not copy the word CODE , please note the script starts with the :
  • right click the highlighted text and choose copy
:OTL

:reg
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]

In Task Manager
  • click file
  • click New Task(Run…)
  • type the following line into the open: field
    "%userprofile%\desktop\otl.exe"
  • click ok

OTL should open.
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, right click and select paste. The text you previously copied should appear.
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered

In Task Manager
  • click file
  • click New Task(Run…)
  • type the following line into the open: field
    explorer.exe
  • click ok
Is your desktop back?

If so please continue with the next steps.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
Next
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Copy and paste the following bold text into the box under Custom Scan

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • GMER log
  • both OTL logs
Thanks
I'm not able to get the following to open. "%userprofile%\desktop\otl.exe" I typed in the task manager open field both with the quotes and without as I wasn't sure which I should do. Both times it said it couldn't find the file and to click the search button to try to find it. I'd love to click the search button but unfortunately I don't have a start menu. Nora
Okay I did everything and all was well until the very end. After the last otl scan when it opened the two windows you said it would, both were un-named and empty. I wasn't able to name and/or save them. It said I didn't have permission. This is my personal home computer but there are other users attached to it. When I first got it I must have created an administrator account with a password. I never log on as administrator. I log on under my own user icon. I'm afraid I don't even know how to log on as administrator or what my password is. I'm sorry I didn't mention all this before and hope it doesn't over complicate things. I truly appreciate all you've done to help me so far but I think we've come to an impass. Nora
I forgot to tell you that I did get my icons and start menu back.
Also here's the GMER.txt file you wanted.

Hi nojelo,

I log on under my own user icon.

That's the account we want to work from.

Let's see if we can get a log from this scan tool.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box

Hi nojelo,

Trusted Zone: motive.com\pattta.att
Trusted Zone: motive.com\patttbc.att

Is there a reason for these to be in the Trusted Zone?

Let's go deeper.

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the combofix log. How's the computer?

Thanks
Oldman960, I've attached the combofix.log. Computer is better. At least have icons and a start menu. Running slow but that's nothing new. Regarding the above mentioned .att files, I think they might be from my ISP. I have ATT and I have a diagnostic program from them on my computer. Thanks again for everything and I'll wait to hear from you. Nora PS So how old is old? Bet I've got you beat!
