You are the man,

Plus about 6 others I can take no credit for this I have some excellent help

I have a programme to fix you permissions but I will need to find it

Could you now run MBAM as CF did not look to bad and when I get back from work I will locate the programme for you and post it.

Thank you for your perseverence in helping us identify and kill this
Good evening Russ

OK for the programmes that don't want to play please do the following

Download this programme

Drag each of the exe files that you are unable to run into Inherit.exe.

Then wait for it to say "OK"

The missing Dll files are in the attached zip file - download to your desktop and then extract them to your system32 folder

📎dll_files.zip

Having done all that can you let me know how your computer is behaving now
I downloaded the Inherit.exe, and dragged various dead programs, but they were not resurrected. I would like to fix some of them as downloading them can be a pain, as well as wasted space. I downloaded another MBAM, and it executed and found a few remaining dirt ball programs. The log is below. In terms of the PC, it is rebooting as normal, the web browser is clean and working normally, and everthing else appears OK. I have a Windows installer linked to Pinnicle Studio open up everytime I try to run some media files (WMV, AVI, etc). I think this may be a remnent virus or something. I have not worked the Web Browser very hard, as I am running without security (aside from Symantic). Oh, the inherit program does work, I was tryng to immunize the shortcut and not the EXE file. Spybot is back in action and scanning away. When I have a confirmed a clean PC, I would like to know what you think happended on my PC. From many of the other HJT subjects, looks like this is the happening Virus/Malware beasty of the Month. Also, I want to fortress my PC. I am pretty sure I have gotten the last 2 Viruses from web page adds that autoloaded. I want that to stop. Thanks, Russ
Yep Russ this one is the flavour of the month - but thanks to you and a few others we can now kill it

What I will do now is remove my tools and give you a quick spring clean. Then I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and let me know of any remaining problems :)

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..Run OTS and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep. For AVZ, Sysprot and any fixes on your desktop just delete them

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 16.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

SPRING CLEAN

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

THEN

Download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SuperAntispyware Run weekly to keep your system clean
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
  • Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :wavey:

OK got that out of the way. In which way do you wish to secure your system ?
Ok, I ran the utilities and loaded new Java. I could not find any Java named programs in the Programs list, so I went into the windows folder and deleted the Java folder. I then rebooted and executed the new EXE. That is when I figured out, you probably wanted me to delete the ActiveX stuff in the programs list. Anyway, let me know if you think I should now delete the activeX stuff and then reboot and reload the New Java version again. As for the extra security stuff, I don't think I understand the firewall. I need a play by play on how to use this. Right now I have SoftPerfect running, but I am not sure it is doing anything. My big concern, is that I am a torrent guy, so I will be heading off to the Pirate Bay soon. Now, I am pretty sure the last two virus attacks I have suffered came from Adds that auto loaded the crude. The updated Java might help me there, but I also noticed a Flash Killer in the Spyware Blaster Tools. I selected this thinking it might help as well. This google redirect thing hit me while I had Defender, Spybot, SoftPerfect, and Symantic all running. How can I prevent these browser hijacks? Finally, I could not get Windows Defender running, and I still have this Windows Installer lanching everytime I open up most AVI and WMV files. Pinnicle Studio is the offending program, but I have turned the updater on that off. Thanks for all the help on this. If not for people like yourself, my PC data and considerable time would be lost. Not to mention, I would have had to go to the Eastern Block countries and hunted all these Virus making b@stards down. Russ Barrow Thanks
Lets go the easy way and use an uninstaller :)

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Download the MSI cleanup utility from here

Instructions are on the same page - you will need to remove Pinnacle and you may need to re-install it afterwards

As for downloading with P2P you will need to scan the programme before you even think of opening or running it - once with an AV and once with MBAM

Did you try defender on the inherit programme - %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

Let me know how that goes :)
I ran all the Defender EXE files to the inheret, but it is working for me now. It may have just needed a reboot. Downloaded the Windows program, and that appeared to stop the installer for Pinnicle. As for the P2P stuff, I am not getting infected from the files, I am getting infected from the adds that run on a search page. I assume that the JAVA upgrade should fix this, but I also selected the Flash Killer in the Spyware Blaster tools. What do you think on that. Finally, I see the Tea Timer (part of Spybot) is taking up considerable memory. How significant is this program. I am getting the Vitual Memory thing too often. I guess fortressing the PC is going to require more RAM. Thanks for the help. Russ

A good tactic but as you are aware these sites are prime vectors for malware. Have you considered using drop my rights when you use IE to reduce the risk of a drive by infection ?
