Urgent Help needed to remove Virus and Effects

Hi All,

I have spent the past day and a half trying to get my laptop to work okay again. I think I might have been infected with the Win32/Heur virus and/or Type_win32 and/or Trojan.Inject.

I can run avg and malwarebytes but the system will not let me connect to update either of these. I can access many web pages okay but it doesn't seem to let me access any site such as malwarebytes, AVG, or microsoft updates etc. System is also very slow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator") every time you run them

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop


  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

    Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.


Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have downloaded the ATF Cleaner and that ran with no problems at all.

However, ComboFix won't run on my laptop. I downloaded it to my Desktop but each time I tried to run it I got the following message box:-

The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised.

Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus 'Virut'

Whether I close the box by clicking OK or by closing it using the "X" at the top right hand side the result is the same. The progamme closes and ComboFix is removed from my Desktop.

I even tried saving it to my Desktop as Combo-Fix but the result was the same. Obviously I turned off all anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes first.

Other things that might be helpful to you:-
1) If I try to update AVG anti-Virus programme it will find the update but won't download it.
2) Malwarebytes also won't let me update.
3) I can visit many webpages but ones for Microsoft and Anti-Virus sites won't open

I have also attached a new HJT log in case that helps.

Hope to hear from you soon as I have no idea how to proceed.

Click: Start > All Programs> Accessories
Open Notepad, click on Format and uncheck Word Wrap.

If you have 'Virut', you're going to have to do a clean install of Windows as it can't be cleaned.
'Virut' infects (.exe/.com/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files).


Kaspersky Online Scanner

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Hi, Thanks for all your help. I am really concerned to read that if I have "Virut" it cannot be deleted and I would need to do a reformat of my hard drive. Would it be possible to copy any of my data files such as photos, email addresses, music etc. before I do this? I have a ACER laptop that came pre-installed with Windows Vista so I am not sure how I would reload the operating system. I did make the back up discs as instructed when the machine was new, about 2 years ago. Just a thought but is it possible to re-install the operating system onto a new hard drive using these discs? I am okay to change hard drives in the laptop but have no idea how to re-install the operating system? Can I ask why my AVG anti-virus program doesn't pick up this Virut virus? The resident shield part of AVG keeps picking up the following:- File Name : C:\Windows\System32\dcbedit.exe Threat name: Virus found Win32/Heur Anyway, I will work my way through you last instructions and carry out the online scan and post the results as soon as possible. I assume this online scan will take some time to run especially as I have a fairly large and full hard drive! 1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator") every time you run them

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator") cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

Reboot the computer in Normal Mode,
Post the Cure-it report and a fresh HijackThis log

Hi, Thanks for all your help. I have downloaded the programme (Dr.WEB CureIt) and run the express scan. It did find some infected files (Win32.Virut.56) but cured them all - GREAT! I am now running the full scan afer doing the settings changes, but at the speed it is going it will be some hours (12+) before I will be able to post the results. It has found a few more files infected with the same virus! I will post the results and a new HJT file as soon as possible Best wishes and thanks, Tony :pullhair:

Hi,

Well I ran the anti-virus programme and on the express scan it found and cured 56 files that had Win32.Virut.56

The full scan and report took well over 15 hours and found 2777 infected files with the same virus. However when I tried to save the report I had a "blue screen" crash and lost it before I could save the file!

I have attachd a new HJT file.

What should I do next or have I lost the hard drive now?

Hi Again, I have just run the express scan again and this time it only found 4 infected files! Does this mean that I could still clean the hard drive up? Thanks for your help. Best Wishes, Tony :pullhair:

Try running Combofix again.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator") every time you run them

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Have just tried Combofix again and same as last time, it won't run and the same warning is displayed! Any other ideas? I am still unable to update my Malwarebytes or AVG so I guess there is still something blocking this? Should I run Dr Webb Cureit again, and if I can get a clean express run, move onto a full scan? It seems this virus just keeps coming back! Or is there another programme I can try? I look forward to hearing from you again. Thanks, Tony

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis: Do each one separately.

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

Hi,

Thanks again for your help.

Well, the bad news is that all those sites are being blocked on my infected laptop and none would load up.

However, other sites will work okay, so I did a google search for a site that would check individual files and found this one:-
http://www.filterbit.com/
No idea if it is any good.

All the files were scanned one at a time and each reported:-
"No Viruses Detected"

Any idea what is blocking thses site on my infected laptop?
