…..and guess what? I can now run malwarebytes!! It doesn't stop after a few seconds but instead completes its scan.

:woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

In fact, it only found one object: avenger.exe which it lists as "Trojan.Agnet"

I'm thinking this is good news, eh? Thank you for all your patient help; let me know if this means I'm "all clear".
TTDaddy,

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Thanks Tomk

I ran the ComboFix uninstall and the OTC app. MBA-M now runs successfully AND detects no bad files.

I will read and incorporate the links you sent. In the process of trying to clean my computer, I have ended up with CCleaner, MBA-M and Sophos along with HijackThis on my laptop (I have been running Webroot SpySweeper and Window Washer as well as Symantec AntiVirus for years). Should I keep any of these installed? Some? All? Recommendations?

A heartfelt thanks to you and to this forum for getting me 'clean'. I tried a different forum first and got no help (though I'm sure they provide help to plenty of people). This is a tremendous resource and I'm oh-so-grateful for your help and patience. Many thanks and happy trails!

TTDaddy

P.S. WOO-HOO!!
TTDaddy,

I tried a different forum first

Please be sure to notify the other forum that you have been helped so that they can close your thread.

You need one (and only one) anti-virus. You have Symantec (Norton). If you are happy with it, keep it. If your subscription expires, you may want to try a free one. There are links to some free ones in the links I gave you.

You need one Anti-spyware. You have Spysweeper. That will be fine. You could use Mbam but because it doesn't have a "real time" component, it won't run automatically. You would need to update and run it weekly. Because it doesn't have a "real time" component, it won't interfere with your other program so you could keep it also and update and run it every month or so just as a double check.

It's good to run a temp file cleaner every so often. CCleaner will be fine. Please stay away from the registry cleaner component. I recommend that you never use it. Risk of damage to your system is greater than the possible advantages.

You can uninstall HijackThis. I'm a little surprised that you still have it. It should have been deleted when you ran OTC. I'm not sure what happened there.

That should have you in pretty good shape. Please review the recommendations in the links I gave you for further advise.
Thanks Tomk I've already started on the recommendations you made and will incorporate as many "safe" practices as is feasible. Thanks again (sincerely!) for your help. I guess this thread can now be closed. Cheers!
