Click Start >> Run, and then type ComboFix /u and hit enter.
You can now delete any other tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.
Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.
Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.
Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:
Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster
Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
First, I would like to thank you for your perseverance and patience.
One question I have is:
Your opinion on Anit-virus software.
Should I pay for one or use the free variety? What's the difference?
Which one do you prefer.
My Home PC has McAfee which is provided thru my IP. It's an older machine, and runs at a snails pace with Mc running.
I will download and employ the programs you advised.
Thankyou again,
HankR
My personal opinion is that you should never pay for an AntiVirus. The free ones are often just as good, if not better. Two I usually recommend are Avast! (which I use) and Avira AntiVir. AVG is also another decent free one.
As for the difference, well, to be honest the only difference I can think of is that one of them you have to pay for. As above, I can't think of any advantages of the paid ones. As you mentioned, some can slow you down. This is often the paid ones, McAfee and Symantec are both famed resource hogs.
But that's just my opinion
i hope this isn't a bad sign. I rebooted just to see if i could get a clean boot and shut down.'
I have the error message again.

You've got a couple of different issues from what I can see. The first thing we can try is re-installing Service Pack 3. You can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs as above, looking for this entry: Windows XP Service Pack 3
Reboot your computer after uninstalling and the go to the Windows Updates Site to re-install it.
Reboot your computer after re-installing (you will be prompted to anyway) and see if that helps anything.
Let me know how it goes, or if you have any questions.
SP3 shows up on the Add/Remove software list (but with no file size), but it won't allow an uninstall. I had no luck on Microsoft Update.
Also, windows update is having difficultly with update. 4 of 4 failed.
Any suggestions?
Try using System Restore to restore back to: 7/16/2009 4:32:21 PM - System Checkpoint
I recommend you then check for any System File error, by clicking Start >> Run, typing: sfc /scannow
then hit Enter. This will start the scan, please wait until finished before doing anything else.
After that, try uninstalling SP3 again.
If you still have problems, I recommend you start a new topic in the Microsoft Windows forum stating your problem and providing a link to this topic. I'm not going to be around for the next few days so I wont be able to help any more, but our Tech Team are fantastic and should be able to get you sorted.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance.
If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread.
Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
