I receive bad image messages on everything I click on. I get the following: "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\govahotu.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. I've reinstalled Windows. I've unclicked hide files. I've ran anti-malware. It did find 91 infected objects but could not delete them all. I ran a scan with hijack this and here is my log.

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
Click on delete a file on reboot…
Copy and paste the following into the "File name:" text box and then click Open:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\govahotu.dll

When you are asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?", click OK.

Your PC MUST reboot to delete the file!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop - unless you already have it, in which case skip to the "updating" bit below.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Download Sec-Info2.zip from here and save it to your Desktop. You will need to extract the file.

Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see a folder with a file in it - double click Sec-info2.vbs to run it.
Once you have been informed that the script has completed, a text file called Sec-Info.txt should be created in the same folder - you may need to wait a couple of seconds for it to appear..
Please copy and paste the contents of the text file into your next reply and then you can delete both of the folders and their contents.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Okay I got on HJT and rebooted to delete the file. I am running Malwarebytes now (I already had that). Now, I am unable to click on the Sec-Info2.zip file, because now when I click on things it just says Application not found. I am able to click on the internet and use yahoo search engine, but I am unable to type any addresses into the address bar. I will send the report from malwarebytes as soon as it finishes as well as the other file. But is there any way that I can be able to click on that secinfo file? Thanks and thank you so much for helping me!
The first log is the uninstall list and the second is the log from the scan with hijackthis. I am still running malwarebytes. My computer is running okay. Also, I tried using Opera yesterday instead of Internet Explorer and I think it may have made it worse. I probably shouldn't have done it, but everywhere I was reading said that Internet Explorer could be the cause of the problem. Everything works okay except when I click on a link , it says application not found. Also, as I said in the last reply any address that I type into the address bar will not work. it also comes up with the message, "Application not found." Thanks again for your help.
Also, when the application not found message appears another Microsoft Internet Explorer window pops up but it is blank. Sorry, forgot to mention that. Computer is now running a bit slower also.
Again, I apologize for all of the replies, but I got the secinfo file to work. I will include that in my next reply and that will be the last one. :)
It look like your OS took some damage from the infection - poor Windows! Have the problems with IE just appeared since you removed the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\govahotu.dll, since the "bad image" messages started, or previous to that?
Do you have exactly the same problems with Opera as i'm not too sure from your previous post whether you were referring to it or IE?
Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
Let me have a fresh HJT log as well as answers to the above and we'll take it from there.
The problems with IE have always been the problems with the PC. It seemed as if IE was the problem. That is why I downloaded Opera to see if it would change how the computer operated and Opera worked much faster and I could click whatever I wanted and it would work. But my husband and I found out very quickly that Opera doesn't pull up all websites such as the Veterans' website which is a website that my husband needs. That is why I deleted Opera and started using IE again. Is there another internet browser that we can use? It's just really weird with IE. I use att.net and when I search for anything it works, but when I click on a link or try to type an address in the address bar, it says application not found. Here is the log from HJT.
Actually, I think I fixed my problem. I just downloaded Firefox and everything works so I'll stick with that and ditch IE. Thanks so much for all your help!!!!!!!!
Personally I prefer Firefox, but each to their own. I don't know that the IE problem is malware related, and I don't know what exactly is wrong with it anyway. If you feel like taking a shot at getting it to work, start a fresh thread in this part of the forum where they may have a better idea of the cause and solution.
The HJT log looks OK, so as the computer appears to be behaving, i'd say you were done, apart from a little housekeeping:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your version of Sun Java needs updating:

1) Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top and save it to your Desktop.

2) Download JavaRa from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click JavaRa.exe to begin.
  • Pick your prefered language from the drop-down menu and click Select.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older version of Java - obvious really, isn't it!
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, just in case you have any problems with Java afterwards.
3) Run the installer that you downloaded earlier.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. You can get the latest version here.

Your log doesn't appear to show a third-party software firewall installed - if you have one, and i've missed it, please ignore this.
If you are relying the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, then you need to install one. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will.
If you are using a wireless router that comes with a NAT hardware firewall, this also doesn't monitor outgoing connections.

There are a few free firewalls available.
Comodo Firewall Pro, available here. This download has both a firewall and anti-virus in the same package, so be sure that you uncheck the AV option if you choose to install this one.
PC Tools Firewall Plus, available here.
Online Armor Free, available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download them all to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
