Can somebody please help with with the "not a valid image" messages I'm getting when I start up and when I open programs? This started yesterday after I installed avg free 2011 in place of avg free 2010. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Hello and :welcome:

I will be helping you remove malware on your computer. Log research takes time, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not install/uninstall anything on your computer unless advised.
  • Do not run any other scanning tools other than those instructed for you to use.
  • Follow the instructions on the order they are given.
  • Stay with this thread until advised when your computer is clean. Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer.
  • If you are being helped regarding this problem on another forum please advice us so that we can close this thread.
  • If you do not reply within 3 days after my last response, I will be asking you whether you still need assistance and if you still don't reply within 48 hours then the topic will be closed.
  • And lastly, if you have any questions, please ask before proceeding with any of the advised fixes.

Your google app may have been corrupted. Let's dig deeper.

Please do the following:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel.
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button.
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box.
  • Click on to insert the attachment into your post
Please post both DDS logs in your next reply.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

To post in your next reply:
1. DDS logs.
2. GMER log.
Thanks for the help, inzanity. I think you are right about the google app being corrupted. I think my first few scans with avg free2011 wiped out some files. I have downloaded dds.pif to my desktop, and I have disable resident shield and auto updates on avg free2011, but I get the same messages when trying to run dds.pif. Regards, boyofsummer
Hi,

That error message came up when you run DDS? Can you please post the complete error title bar? As am only reading "_view32.exe - Bad Image"
Yes! It comes up when I run anything and seemingly when any process attempts to run. I run dds and the message reads the following things in the title bar when I click ok for each one. You just saw the lview one because that is what I used to screen capture "The application or DLL C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~3\GOEC62!1.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." These items in succession in the title bar of error msg. dds.pif find.exe setpath.dat cmd.exe swreg.DAT regsvr32.exe cscript.exe findstr.exe PEV.DAT
Let's try this:

If you have an active internet connection, copy/paste the links below into your browser, don't click them or the rogue might redirect. If you don't have an active internet connection, download the tools from another machine, and transfer them to the affected machine via USB flash drive.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try once again to run DDS and GMER.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.
No dice. ran rkill and now avg wants to quarantine ''… local settings\TEMP|RARSFXO\NIRD\ IEXPLORE.EXE " and "…\local settings\TEMP\RARSFXO\NIRCMD.EXE dds still won't run because of bad image messages
Hi,

Please do the following, have your installation CD if it asks for it:

Click on Start then Run, type in the following or copy/paste it into the Run box:

SFC /SCANNOW

then try running DDS.
I've hesitated to do SFC /SCANNOW since I don't think I have my XP cd. Will any xp do as long as I write down the key from the my computer general info screen? boyofsummer
Hi, The CD should be of the same version as your current operating system, like if you're using XP Pro then the CD should be XP Pro. But I'll have to confer with my colleagues regarding this. Let's hold off for the moment sfc. Thank you.
For the meantime, let's try this if it runs:

OTL:
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on your C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
Hi,

Doug, one of our excellent tech and administrator has just confirmed that we can use other XP CD's as long as it is the same as the one installed in your computer (Pro or Home).

Let's try OTL as mentioned above first. If that still won't work then go for sfc /scannow and try running DDS and GMER. Thanks.
Hey, sorry for the delay. I found my xp disc, but I was not asked for it when I ran SFC /SCANNOW. I was able to run dds, but I had to click the the bad image error ok a bunch of times. . I ran gmer and ended up getting blue screen of death. See what you can do with the dds logs attached below. Thanks, boyofsummer
