I am working on the computers at the church, cleaning up a problem that was occuring between 2 computers running Win XP. The new one has XP SP3 and I'm embarassed to see that this computer that has the phishing.dbx is still has SP2. (They were supposed to order a flashdrive so we could backup the data and it hasn't happened. This will be my priority for tomorrow.) It turns out that a bad wireless receiver was causing data corruption across the network. We resolved that- after dealing with spyware/malware and installing a new computer. In scanning this computer as I was ready to give it a clean bill of health, Kaspersky located this

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{E84BD39C-7CE0-4BBA-B3EF-D30940A72FB6}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\Phishing.dbxSuspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen5
Please advise how to safely remove it. I am attaching original and current Hijackthis, Malwarebytes, and Virus total and the Kaspersky report.

I have run ERUNT to backup the registry and used combofix to install a recovery partition.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. -Jcatsmom

Hi Jcatsmom,

You did have some evidence of something turning off the Security Center. MBAM reset it for you.

Kaspersky is reporting an infection in an Outlook Express folder. It does not specify which message. The only way you will find and remove the infected e-mail is to manually check the Phishing folder in Outlook Express.

Open OE and go to the specified folder and remove any unsolicited e-mail, probably with an attachment. Do this for all Identities on the computer.

We can have a quick look for any other malware that may be present.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks

Please clarify what you mean by this. I hope to schedule the scans tomorrow. -Jcatsmom
Hi Jcatsmom, Some antivirus programs have a script blocking feature. Norton (Symantec) used have that feature but not any more. Just follow the rest of the instructions and DDS should run. It takes a few minutes to run and all you will see is a black screen with some text in it and a blinking white cursor. The notepads will open in about 2-3 minutes.
Oldman, I was able to delete all the files in the phishing folder. None were needed. I had previously used Startup lite- rolled that back so all entries would show. I have included 📎Attach.txtthe DDS scan results and attachment. Thank you for taking the time to look at them. -Jcatsmom DDS (Ver_09-05-14.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 17:22:14.10 on 06/18/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.495.158 [GMT -5:00] AV: Norton AntiVirus *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINNT\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINNT\system32\spoolsv.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.5.0.134\ccSvcHst.exe C:\WINNT\Explorer.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\WINNT\System32\taskswitch.exe C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe C:\Program Files\Netopia\C3kWepN.exe C:\WINACS\ACSTRAY.EXE C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.2\Apps\apdproxy.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\16.5.0.134\ccSvcHst.exe C:\WINNT\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\ACS Technologies\AutoBackup\ACSbkup.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqgalry.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\computer tools\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://my.att.net/ mStart Page = hxxp://www.gatewaybiz.com BHO: Adobe PDF Link Helper: {18df081c-e8ad-4283-a596-fa578c2ebdc3} - Hi Jcatsmom,

No problem. :)

Good job. The DDS log is ok.

For the most part you have an up to date (SP3 notwithstanding) computer. If the Kaspersky detection was the only problem you were having, we'll tidy up and I'll make a few suggestions.

Your java is out of date. Click your start button, open Control panel.
  • Locate the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup)
  • double click it to open it
  • click the Update tab
  • Click update now
After the java is updated, reboot your computer if not prompted to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

From your desktop, please delete if present
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
I suggest you keep AFT and MBAM for use as an on demand scanner.

Next

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

Updates and upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. You have an antivirus program and an on demand antispyware (MBAM) program.

I recommend you use an antispyware program with resident (real time) scanning. You have Spybot, I suggest you enable Teatimer.

To enable TeaTimer:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode (say "Yes" to the warning if necessary) > Tools > Resident.
Check the following:Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.
Ok any prompts.

There is a newer version of Spybot here. Uninstall the old version first.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware, IMO)

Good! I see you all ready have this program, Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

-Secure your Internet Explorer

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

- Ensure that Automatic Update is turned on so you get all the latest patches.
Click start, control panel, click Security Center.

- Keep your antivirus program updated, as well as any other security programs you have.
