[Resolved] *Possibly* Vundo- no other scans are catching it...

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

The problem started a few days ago and was almost definitely Vundo. I had Avast on trial period, but it had expired that day. Scanned with Spybot and it came up. It would say it was fixed but it obviously wasn't and kept coming up in subsequent scans. At this point, I could only reboot in Safe Mode (or it would go straight to blue screen). Downloaded AVG and scanned in Safe Mode- didn't seem to do much. Downloaded MalwareBytes and it caught it! Everything seemed fixed and was fine for a day or so. Yesterday searching google on firefox and noticed some (but not all) the search pages where showing legitimate sites, but clicking on the link would redirect to CouponMountain. At first I thought it was the AVG toolbar, and tried to disable it (which I couldn't without uninstalling AVG, apparently). The problem got worse, now all clicked links redirect to malicious sites (which are blocked by my WOT addon). In addition, I'm back in Safe Mode because again it kicks me out of a normal boot up. None of the previously mentioned programs detect it. I uninstalled and reinstalled Spybot and Malwarebytes, but they still can't see it. Uninstalled AVG and downloaded Avira, but can't install it (it looks like teatimer is blocking it, could that be right?). In any case, I only barely know what I'm doing here, and I can't search for the solution because I can't trust any of the sites I come across. Help! :pullhair:

(BTW a lot of these I recognize as factory settings because we restored it about a month ago. It's a hand me down Dell…)

Hi Hillery,

You will need to temporarily disable both your antivirus program and firewall before you run this next tool.

Please read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when the tool runs.

If you all ready have combofix on your computer please delete combofix.exe from your desktop.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[external image: Posted Image]

[external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. Close all browsers/windows first.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not run combofix more than once. If you have problems, please post back for additional instructions.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • combofix log

Hi! Thanks again for your help… ran ComboFix- it restarted halfway through the scan after detecting the five files listed in this first part of this report. I searched the SKYNET prefix (recognizing the terminator reference). The virus described doesn't sound like what was happening to my comp, though. Also, wallpaper's reset (leading me to wonder what else may be reset). For now it seems the browser hijack is disabled (at least the test run I made seemed fine). System seems a bit faster as well. Here's the report:

Hi Hillery,

My pleasure.

Also, wallpaper's reset (leading me to wonder what else may be reset).

Please elaborate. What was your wallpaper before and what is it now?

Are you able to access normal Windows now?

Please disable this program until we are finished as it may interfere with our fixes.
SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

µTorrent
You have µTorrent, a P2P/file sharing program installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx

http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles…cles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

You have a very old vulnerable version of java installed. Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Next, click your start button, open Control panel.
  • Locate the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup)
  • double click it to open it
  • click the Update tab
  • Click update now
After the java is updated, reboot your computer if not prompted to.

Next, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
  • On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
  • On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
  • check all 3 boxes
  • Click OK

You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM

  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post back with
  • MBAM log
  • new DDS log (just the DDS.txt)

Please describe any symptoms you are having.

Thanks
We seem to be running fine now- system boots normally and I'm accessing regular windows. For now the Browser Hijacking seems to have been eliminated. Our wallpaper before yesterday was simply a picture pulled off the internet (from a travel photography website- of a dock with sea and sky in case you where curious) that I had set a few months ago. It is now back to Stonehenge, which is its factory setting. It is also worth noting the virus we thought we had eliminated before I came here changed the wallpaper to black with red letters warning to get a (no doubt malware infested) antivirus program. When Malwarebytes removed that virus (Virtumonde), it went back to the one I had set, but now it is Stonehenge.

Regarding TeaTimer: It seems to have been shut off without me. Though it was running when I first came to this forum with my problem, when I went to disable it prior to running ComboFix, it had already been disabled. Would the virus have done that? Or, if it says somewhere in the reports that it is still running, what am I to do if it says it is disabled on my end?

Before I include the logs: Once again Malwarebytes says it has found nothing. It may be there is nothing to find now, but it said the same thing when there clearly was something, which makes me question my version of the program. Either way, it is updated now and I include its report:

P.S. What is or was wrong with my computer specifically?
Hi Hillery,

Thanks for the info. I'll try to answer some questions then we'll carry on.

The wallpaper MBAM removed was no doubt infected (desktop hijacker). You should be able to restore the wallpaper you had as I don't see where we removed any image and it seems to have been set to default by one of our tools.

Teatimer: Malware may have disabled it. It showed as running in your origonal HJT log but is not running now according to DDS. You should be able to restart it when we are done without any problem. On the rare occasion when it gets corrutped and you are unable to stop it, uninstall is the only way. I don't believe there is a problem though.

Don't be too hard on MBAM. It is a very good program, after all it did take care of the desktop hijacker. The infection you had was a rootkitted search hijacker. MBAM can deal with some but not all of these types of infection. We had to use GMER to find it.

Where is your antivirus program? All I see is an AVG BHO.

One more scan to check our handiwork.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Set the Save In to Desktop
  • click the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Everything still ok?

Thanks
Phew! Kaspersky was the longest scan yet! I take that as a good thing (thorough, at least). Everything still seems to be going fine, same as yesterday. Regarding our missing antivirus- we had Avast but it was a trial version, and we caught Virtumonde the day it expired. In fact, it said it detected a virus but could do nothing to remove it (it just kept popping up a window saying we were infected- got in the way more than anything). Shortly afterwords it popped up saying it had expired (which we had been expecting). After we (supposedly) removed Virtumonde with Malwarebytes, I removed Avast and downloaded AVG but found we were infected with something anyways and AVG didn't seem to see it. I removed AVG because I was going to install Avira instead, but was unable to install Avira- if I recall there was a window that popped up saying it was blocked. That is when I came here. I figured I would install it when you give the all clear, unless there is a better program you can recommend?

As for the no surfing policy- I have been avoiding the internet, however my Husband thought we were fixed already and was on this morning, so I am sincerely sorry if anything else has latched on because of that. We're all on the same page now. Here are the reports, Kaspersky seems to have some bad news…

Hi Hillery,

No, nothing really bad in Kaspersky, one is in quarantine and the other is in an old System Restore point. Both will be removed during the tools cleanup.

A small note about Avast Home (free version). It does not really expire. You simply have to register it to get a product key that is good for one year. At that time, just submit for a new key.
http://avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Not any one antivirus program will catch it all. Some detect what other miss and vise versa. We see logs here with all products represented. :(

Any one of these 3 free ones should serve you well. Only install one.

I suggest you keep MBAM as an on demand scanner. Don't forget to re-enable Teatimer when you are done.

Updates and upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. Once you install your antivirus just add a firewall.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware, IMO)
