Hi there, let me start by saying thanks for you help in advance, i was here a while ago with a separate issue and have since recommend visiting this site to anyone i come across with malware problems. Maybe a week ago firefox started opening windows to seemingly random websites every ten minutes or so, i ran a virus scan using mcafee and malware scans using multiple programs including malware bytes, the virus scan was clear and malware came back with some minor cookies issues and cleaned them, then problem with opening windows didn't stop. I didnt think to much of it, it was slightly annoying but not disruptive. Yesterday, i clicked on a youtube vidoe link in goggle and all hell broke lose, macfee remove multiple viruses and although winpatrol never went off one apparently got through, a fake anti virus bug was installed, i didn't click anything at all and immediately ran malwarebytes which would not load, so i ran a virus scan and found 5 items including one in memory, it cleaned them and restarted my computer. After rebooting, my computer was fubar, registry items seemed to be scrambled if not deleted, programs didn't work correctly, basically it was broke. so i booted up in safe mode and restored to a point 14 days ago before any funny stuff started, that worked in fixing the registry problems and my computer is operating correctly again and all scans report clean, but the original slightly annoying firefox random window things is still there. So here i am, back to the pros to help my check my system and get it as close to 100% clean as I can. Again thanks for any help you can provide Here are two of the three requested logs, Gmer ran for 3 hours then apparently rebooted my system without finishing (not a good sign i think) i'm going to start running it again once i post this and hopefully it will finish correctly the second time. *UPDATE-EDIT* Gmer still wont finish scanning, tried it three times, reboots my system every time halfway through. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate, thank you for helping me. I ran combo fix however like Gmer is rebooted my system only 3 minutes into the scan and did not produce a log in c:\ from what i can see. My system seems to be acting normal however Mcafee scan has started scanning even though i selected to never turn it back on… Also java is updating which i assume is normal after clearing the cache
I don't see any combofix.txt file anywhere, I do however see a combofix directory that acts like "my computer" folder and shows my system drives and I also see a combo-fix directory, that may or may not be from an old repair and never got deleted.
Yes, but it was strange that it was re enabled after it rebooted…I guess i cant completely rule out user error on that, but i do remember double checking and seeing the warning that my system could be ask risk
Lets try MBAM first.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Then click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Running scan now, i got an error that i think said 417, I assume it was because I already had mbam installed and it didn't like that, other then that it installed just fine and I already had the latest updates. Will post logs when scan is complete…
Found a backdoor, surprised to see that there, i haven't done any surfing in the last couple days, other then the random window pops ups, I only been to a game forum and 3d design tutorials. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 4052 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 4/29/2010 4:51:24 PM mbam-log-2010-04-29 (16-51-24).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 136057 Time elapsed: 4 minute(s), 42 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DARKNESS (Trojan.Backdoor) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Lets do this next.

Delete the combofix you have now.

Next:

Download Combofix to a flash drive or other removable media, and run it from the USB device.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ABCD.exe before saving it to your flash drive / thumb drive.

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

Double click on the ABCD.exe ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.
Same result, Combofix runs for 3 minutes then reboots my system with no log. I close winpatrol before everyscan but a couple minutes after reboot it flags PEVstartsystem, it looks like combo fix….its always a delay and i select do not allow….
  • Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ABCD.exe" /killall

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
Sorry, not sure if you saw my last edit about winpatrol.. I close winpatrol before every scan but a couple minutes after reboot it flags PEVstartsystem, it looks like combo fix….its always a delay and i select do not allow…. is winpatrol going to be an issue?
