Hi there and sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you may have a version of the Virut virus. I will need to check that out but you must be prepared to do a full reformat and install. I can clean some of this but it messes with system files enough to make the system virtually unusable

Do not backup or copy any of the following type of files : .exe, .scr, .rar, .zip, .htm, .html as any of these may be a re-infection vector

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit icon to start the program.
  • press start
  • Allow the program to run the initial express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory. If something is found, click the YES button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Note: A pop up may appear during this phase suggesting you purchase their program - click the X at the top right corner of this pop-up to close it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, check the Complete scan box on the left side, even if nothing was found on the initial scan.
  • Then click the small green arrow button on the right under the Dr.Web Antivirus picture to start the complete scan. (This scan will take several hours)
  • During this complete scan - if Dr.Web finds an infection a window will pop up requesting your attention. Select the Cure button.
    • Note:(If the file cannot be cured, Dr.Web will automatically delete the file)
  • Once the scan is complete, on the menu bar, click file and choose report list.
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Note:this report will need to be renamed to Dr.Web.txt in order to post it on the forum.
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Please post the Dr.Web.txt report in your next reply
i ran the program but my internet didnt work on that pc anymore before i could post the log. it cleaned and deleted what it could then told me to restart. now when i log on it instantly logs me right back off so i cant even copy the log manually. next step? reformating and reinstalling windows shouldnt be toobig of a problem, id lke to try to get my documents onto a flash drive though if we can get past the log in problem.
Can you get to safe mode and try to log in that way - or use last known good ? Failing that we could make a Linux live CD to recover
same thing in safe mode, i type in my password, i see the desktop for two seconds then it tells me logging off. administrator and my user name. **edit: i tried last know good point as well, still nothing.
That sounds like it has deleted your userinit. Do you have a windows cd to hand and we can do a parallel install so that you can recover your data before reformat. Or we could utitlise a Live Linux CD to ensure that no infection is transfered
yes i have copies of the CD, sorry if this may take a while its hard to get to the internet to fix your comp when its broken. i have any windows CD i may need, where shall we go from here?
OK then this is a parallel installation where we install a fresh copy of windows to the system. All your old data will be accessible

Boot to the Windows XP installation cd by pressing a key when the "Press any key to boot from cd" prompt appears at the top of the screen.
  • At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter to set up Windows XP.
  • Accept the License Agreement by pressing F8
  • With your current installation selected in the box, press Esc
  • Select C: Partition1 [NTFS] in the box and press Enter
  • To continue setup using this partition, press C
  • Now you should see formatting options…choose the last one, Leave the current file system intact (no changes), and press Enter
  • To use a different folder, press Esc
  • Name the folder WINDOWS0 (just type a 0 (zero)) and press Enter
The Windows installation should begin. This will install Windows to a new folder, leaving your data intact. Any programs installed on the old directory will have to be reinstalled to the new one. Device drivers will also have to be installed for all the hardware to work as it should.

The data will be located in the Documents and Settings folder (C:\Documents and Settings) under your old user account name…so when you set up the new installation, give yourself a slightly different user account name. Then just copy to a USB/CD but remember no files with the following extensions as they will be infected exe, .scr, .rar, .zip, .htm, .html
